TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 504          TIME: 上午 12:45:00          DATE: 2007-1-30

In the society nowadays, as the advocate for unique characteristic and the free development of individuals, more and more schools place emphasis on the personal interests and needs of their students. Yet if the speaker asserts that education will be truly effective only when it is designed to meet the needs and interests of each person, I will disagree.

Conventionally, individual needs and interests do have a great impact on learning and researching. Students have great curiosity and motivation most because of their interests. Interests encourage them to conquer the problems they face and probe for the truth. Moreover, it is their personal interests that can arouse the great potential ability to study and research. Just think about the famous inventor, Edison, whose invention benefit the human beings till now, and among his more than 100 inventions, most are the result of his persistent personal interest.

However, there probably are some disadvantages that schools adopt the aim of meeting individuals' needs and interests through their education, esp, for students in primary and mid-schools. Those students are still in the process of forming their own way of thinking, their values and interests are not yet mature, and they are too young to choose any interest lacking enough experience and substantiate knowledge, for that matter, maybe they even do not know what area they have particular interest. Furthermore, the interests of students are keeping changing as time passes by. As they grow up with an enlargement of the knowledge, as well as the changing circumstances around them, what they are interested in will possibly be totally different from the original and obscure one.

One more important thing must considered is that for some students, they only have some unreasonable interests which will do them only harm and nothing anymore-----such as video games, gambling, etc. If schools fail to rule out this possibility and encourage students to pursue their individual needs whatever the needs are, education will go into something really wrong.

Last but not least, if education is designed to meet the interests of students while ignore the teaching of the teaching of the basic knowledge and skills, the students maybe cultivated to what we know as mere possession of specific talent, and common sense tell me that any field of research require a good grasp of basic knowledge. Therefore, we can reasonably imagine that without such a basic skills, people will find difficult to make great progress in any field that they are interested.

Nevertheless, for students like the ones in university who already gained much basic skills in academics, along with the scope of knowledge broad enough, based on the long-time formed values and way of thinking, education undoubtedly should be presented to them according to their own needs and interests.

In sum, whether the interest-satisfying designing of education is effective or not is according to the different situation of students, education should be designed to them not only to meet their needs and interests, but also their own condition in the study.

ISSUE130-"How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 605          TIME: 上午 12:45:00          DATE: 2007-1-30

In the society nowadays, as the advocation for unique characteristic and the free development of individuals, more and more schools place emphasis on the personal interests and needs of their students. Yet I disagree with the speaker assertion that education will be truly effective only when it is designed to meet the needs and interests of each person in that the way to provide truly effective education is contorted and simplified.

Conventionally, individual needs and interests do have a great impact on learning and researching. It is personal interests that arouse great curiosity and motivation of students to learn and encourage them to conquer the problems they face in order to probe for the truth. Just think about the famous inventor, Edison, whose inventions have benefited human beings till now, and among his more than 100 inventions, most are the result of his persistent personal interest.

However, can education be effective only through satisfying individual’s needs and interests? Probably not. Generally, we consider the following two as the criterions of the educational effectiveness: 1. Can students give full play to their potential for their study? 2. Have the children learned what is basically needed for their study? As we scrutinize the way to achieve education only through meeting individual’s interests by these two criterions, we can find that the speaker’s assertion remains dubious.

To begin with, education that is designed only to meet individual’s needs cannot enable students to give full play to their potential of learning. First of all, lacking enough experience and substantive knowledge, students are too young to choose their own interests. The so-called “interests” for them maybe just something seems mysterious which remains superficial to their conception. For that matter, they even don’t know where their true interests lie in, let alone try their best to learn it.  Furthermore, for some students, they only have some unreasonable interests which will do them nothing but harm-----such as video games, gambling, etc, in this case, how can they achieve in their study?

Secondly, if students only care about what they are interested, their ken will be narrowed in a small field, so that their ability to grasp the knowledge will be inevitably constrained. It is commonly known that a myriad of subjects composed the large-scale and complex knowledge system, in which one interact with another. Students merely learn what they are interested is no more than a frog just sit on the bottom of a well thinking the sky as large as the big of the well.

Thirdly, if education is designed to meet the interests of students while ignoring the teaching of the basic knowledge and skills, which will give the basic way of thinking and solving problems and which is the ground for any further study in mastering of academic subjects, the students will find it difficult to step further during the process of learning and researching. For example, mathematics, knowledge of which as the foundation of most subjects, enables us to think logically, and accordingly, no one can make sophisticated analysis in any field without the knowledge of mathematics.

On the other hand, basic skills and knowledge can make students learn based on a solid knowledge foundation, and studying of diverse subjects will broad the horizon of students as well as make use of the interaction of different field to understand the knowledge profoundly. Hence, education can be effective through these good ways.

In sum, education only focus on interests will restrain the learning of students, and the effectiveness is only partly due to individual’s interests, and aside from it, largely relies on the basic knowledge and well-round learning.

Secondly, if students only care about what they are interested, their ken 这个词用得好will be narrowed in a small field, so that their ability to grasp the knowledge will be inevitably constrained.

On the other hand, basic skills and knowledge can make students learn based on a solid knowledge foundation, and studying of diverse subjects will broad the horizon of students as well as make use of the interaction of different field(s to understand thecertain knowledge profoundly. Hence, education can be effective through these good ways.(觉得这段就是在对前面两段总结,所以认为将其与上一段合并,再将on the other hand 改为therefore。

In sum, education only focus on interests will restrain the learning of students, and the effectiveness is only partly due to 为什么在这要用这个词,可否解释一下 individuals’ interests, and aside from it, largely不准确,从全文看没有体现出来relies on the basic knowledge and well-round learning.

In the society nowadays, as the advocation [advocate]for unique characteristic and the free development of individuals, more and more schools place emphasis on the personal interests and needs of their students. Yet I disagree with the speaker [speaker’s]assertion that education will be truly effective only when it is designed to meet the needs and interests of each person in that the way to provide truly effective education is contorted and simplified.
Conventionally, individual needs and interests do have a great impact on learning and researching. It is personal interests that [not only]arouse great curiosity and motivation of students to learn and[and 换为but also句式会更清楚点] encourage them to conquer the problems they face in order to probe for the truth. Just think about the famous inventor, Edison, whose inventions have benefited human beings till now, and among his more than 100 inventions, most are the result of his persistent personal interest.
However, can education be effective only through satisfying individual’s needs and interests? Probably not. Generally, we consider the following two [似乎two following points更妥当]as the criterions of the educational effectiveness: 1. Can students give full play to their potential for their study? 2. Have the children learned what is basically needed for their study? As we scrutinize the way to achieve education [achieve 的是教育?还是教育的目标呢?]only through meeting individual’s interests by these two criterions[跟scrutinize关联并不紧密], we can find that the speaker’s assertion remains dubious.
To begin with, education that is designed only to meet individual’s needs cannot enable students to give full play to their potential of learning. First of all, lacking enough experience and substantive knowledge, students are too young to choose their own interests. The so-called “interests” for them maybe just something seems mysterious which remains superficial to their conception.[这个句子有毛病] For that matter, they even don’t know where their true interests lie in, let alone [记得北美里面用的是trying]try their best to learn it.  Furthermore, for some students, they only have some unreasonable interests which will do them nothing but harm-----such as video games, gambling, etc, in this case, how can they achieve in their study?
Secondly, if students only care about [确定有这个用法么]what they are interested, their ken will be narrowed in a small field, so that their ability to grasp the knowledge will be inevitably constrained. It is commonly known that a myriad of subjects composed the large-scale and complex knowledge system, [换下句式跟后面的句子连接会更好a large-scale and integrate knowledge system is composed of a myriad of subjects]in which one interact [interacts]with another[one, another 指代什么呢,是不是指subject呢,说清楚啊]. Students merely learn [learning]what they are interested is no more than a frog just sit [sitting]on the bottom of a well [and]thinking the sky as large as the big of the well.[这个比喻用在这挺好的]
Thirdly, if education is designed to meet the interests of students while ignoring the teaching of the basic knowledge and skills,[请问学生的兴趣与基本知识技能是对立的么?满足了前者就一定忽视后者么,最好用education is overemphasized to meet ……] which will give the basic way of thinking and solving problems and which is the ground for any further study in mastering of academic subjects, the students will find it difficult to step further during the process of learning and researching[research]. For example, mathematics, knowledge of which as the foundation of most subjects, enables us to think logically, and accordingly, no one can make sophisticated analysis in any field without the knowledge of mathematics.
On the other hand, basic skills and knowledge can make students learn based on a solid knowledge foundation, and studying of diverse subjects will broad the horizon of students as well as make use of the interaction of different field [fields]to understand the knowledge profoundly. Hence, education can be effective through these good ways.
In sum, education only focus[focusing] on interests will restrain the learning of students, and the effectiveness is only partly due to individual’s interests, and aside from it, largely relies on the basic knowledge and well-round learning.
