Issue28 “Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little.”
------正文------
When standing in front of the sea of knowledge, students always feel frustrated for so many details to learn including the facts and the related principles, ideas, concepts in each curriculum. Is it necessary for anyone to learn such an integrated knowledge? Some people claim that it will help students learn facts more comprehensively. In my opinion, the necessary of learning facts as more detail as possible to help understand depends on the importance and time permit on such condition.
First of all, it is true that learning the ideas, trends and concepts of facts is a good way for students to understand and help memorize them as well as stimulate thinking comprehensively. It is a universal experience for each student while learning, because we will find it easy to understand and memorize some points if we acquaint the related background of knowledge. For example, in order to understand the facts that why China began to promote the ‘Reform and open up’ policy in 1970s and insist the ' one country and two policies' toward Hongkong and Taiwan, students should try to read some related materials about the history and development of China. It is the same for doctors to diagnose disease for patients, as we all know, a good and integrated understanding of a disease from the cause, the process of aggravating to the living standard of the patient is the best guideline for doctors to make the correct decision. So, without having a general understanding of background knowledge, we will have merely a superficial command of 'facts'.
However, it is wise for us to choose what is worth to understand and to spend enough time to think about the facts, which means over focus on the unimportant details and ignore the real significant things does harm to our learning.
In many cases, when we pursue higher and deeper knowledge which is based on the basic facts, we should be liberate enough to make best use of the facts themselves rather than waste time and lost the opportunity to acquire what we really want. As a matter of fact, most great scientists can achieve their success because they can make be best of the accumulated experience from the preceding researchers. Wise men know how to stand on the greats' shoulders to achieve higher success. Just take a look at the internet usage in our daily life, with the ever changing and development of internet, most of us tend to use internet to deal with the daily work such as receiving and delivering E-mails, having a glance at the world news or searching for the specific information. It is not necessary for us to understand how the internet works and which language the procedure writes, etc. What we care the most is to learn the fact how to use the internet efficiently.
In conclusion, I think that the two methods including learning the details of facts to help understand knowledge and making best use of the facts directly to acquire new and more challenging information are both useful to the process of leaning. What is the most important for students is to wisely choose the optimized way for the efficient learning .
