TOPIC: ISSUE183 - "As we acquire more knowledge, things do not become more comprehensible, but more complex and more mysterious."
WORDS: 450 TIME: 1:05:22 DATE: 2007-2-5
The most significant achievement of human beings probably is the rapid and abundant accumulation of knowledge. Scientists dedicate themselves to find out the truth behind things. As numerous important discoveries come up, many things turn out to be simple, clear and comprehensible, while other things become more complex and more mysterious.
On the one hand, with the help of knowledge, citizens in contemporary society can explain much more things than ever before. We now know that thunder is a normal electrical phenomenon between two clouds but not the anger of God. Nearly no people would wonder why the water is running from upper to lower because the concept of gravity becomes a common sense. And people tend to take ships that are floating on water for granted for they are quite familiar with buoyancy principle. As to the daily life, many things which our ancestors must be surprised at become more comprehensible.
On the other hand, although a large group of scientists assert that everything could be interpreted with scientific knowledge, there are, no matter those scientists like or not, many things which have no comprehensible answer but become more mysterious. For example, Copernicus attested that it is sun not earth the center of the universe. After a period, scientists pointed out that broader and huger galaxy exist beyond the solar system. As the research on the universe becomes deeper, the universe becomes more mysterious to human beings.
Moreover, many things, which have existed for quite a long time, develop to be more complex problems. As one example, the intense situation in the Middle East hasn't eased up yet. No body would deny that the war is harmful and dangerous to people. However, no matter how much knowledge people acquired, wars in the Middle East can hardly be eliminated because of differences among national religions. Worse, the knowledge on the benefits from oil attracts many other countries to involve in the situation and make it more complex.
In addition, with the respect of society, social problems such as mental illness are more complex than ever before. People's lives are much more comfortable, while people's anxiety rises as technology advances. It is reported that a great amount of white collars suffer from psychological problems, and many of them once thought about suicide. Last month, a female professor of Zhongshan University jumped from the sixth floor and ended her life. Our society is confronted with psychological problem which is more complex than any past period.
In summary, from what discussed above, a conclusion could be safely drew that something are really more comprehensible with the help of knowledge, however, something become more complex and more mysterious as we attain more knowledge. |
