65 The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument, the arguer suggests that the company should discontinue stocking many of the varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses in order to improve profits. To justify this claim, the arguer provides the evidence that the five best-selling cheeses at the newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, he cites the Cheeses of the World magazine’s survey to prove his claim. This argument suffers from several critical fallacies.
Firstly, the main problem with this argument is that one year is not a long time to justify people’s preference for cheese and the situation of five newest stores does not represent that in the whole country. The new products which are made with the demotic cheese in the five newest stores may attract the local people’s attention in a short time, but these people are possible tired with these cheese and like the import one as usual. Furthermore, the five newest stores maybe nearby Wisconsin and the local residents like the taste of the demotic cheese. So the situation in the five newest stores does not indicate the whole country’s taste.

Secondly, even assuming that the domestic cheese is more popular than the import one, it does not demonstrate that the profit will be improved by just discontinuing stocking the import cheese. First of all, there is no evident relationship between the profit and the account of sale. The sale of import cheese maybe low, but it can also make a sizeable profit with the high price and low cost. On the contrast, if the cost is expensive and the price is low, though is sold well, import cheese does not make money.

Last but not the least, the survey of the magazine is doubtful, because the speaker doesn’t give us the detail of the survey. How many subscribers participate this survey, and are these subscribers representative is totally unknown. Maybe this magazine is special for the demotic cheese and its subscribers prefer demotic cheese better.
At the first glance, this argument seems to be reasonable. But through the above analysis, we can see that the claim lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the argument does not lead strong support to what the arguer maintains. If the speaker wants to make the suggestion more convincing, he/she should do a careful research about the above and other suspicious points.
