TOPIC: ISSUE113 - "It is primarily through our identification with social groups that we define ourselves."
WORDS: 600          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2007-2-8

Ever since human came into being, they have bore a certain, more or less, characteristics of socialization. Many people, hence, assert that humans define themselves by the major means of their identification with social groups. I agree that social groups impress everyone deeply insofar as everyone has a burning desire for joining certain social group. However, everyone has his or her own characteristic, only defined on one's own.

To begin with, everyone has his or her own social group, from children, youths, towards adults. The chief reason for this phenomenon is that humans are desirable to become a member of a group and it is human nature. For supporting examples, one need look no further than youths. In classroom, although young man meet one another almost every day, they keep more frequent contact with some people, their friends, than others. Later on, a social group, consisted of these friends, comes out. Such group provides a host of opportunities for these youth to play together and, what's more important, give them a feeling of safety, which is the most attractive part of a group. The same is true of adults. When youths become adults and earn their livings by occupying certain professions, they form their new social groups in order to facilitate their working and relieve their stress resulting from busy work. In short, social groups are necessary for everyone and are sources of safety and happiness.

Furthermore, as a result of such advantages, each member defines himself or herself through his or her identification with social groups. One reason is that people's roles in social groups exert profoundly influence on members themselves. If we cast a look at youths' social groups, we may find that one, who is quite interesting and welcome by other members in such group, projects more confident. In contrast, those who don't have enough charm or skills to attract others might be self-abased in their later life. In other words, one can infer his or her characteristics from either status or roles in social groups. Another reason for this is that people are willing to alter, even sacrifice, themselves for the purpose of sense of belonging. This statement brings to minds immediately Meng Zi, a Chinese philosopher. Proverbially, when Meng Zi was a child, his mother moved three times in order to pursue a proper place for Meng Zi to study. As she once said (and I paraphrase), "If Meng Zi makes friends with children of literati, he will probably become literati." She followed reason that if Meng Zi hoped to be popular in these children, he would bury himself in book so as to adjust himself to these informed children. In the end, her dream came true. These examples are used to point out that people are deeply impressed by their social groups and are able to learn themselves from such groups.

Admittedly, the distinct characteristics of people can not be defined by social groups. On the one hand, common sense and experience tells us that there are not two things of the same, and even two leaves in a forest have some difference. On the other hand, people are not only objective in the world, but also have subject feeling and thinking. People can laugh and talk, which are far more superior to leaves. Therefore, it is not surprising that everyone looks quite different from each other and such characteristics can only be defined by oneself.

To sum up, we can define someone through his or her social groups. However, we should pay adequate attention to one's own characteristic.
