Argument51
1 First of all, these two groups of patients in the study may not be comparable.(年轻和严重)
2 Secondly, whether there were other differences in the two doctors’ treatments besides using antibiotics and sugar pills is unclear, which might have been the actual cause of the difference in recuperation time.
3 Thirdly, even if antibiotics do contribute to the treatment of muscle strain, it does not mean that all patients with muscle strain can rely on it to recover.
In this medical newsletter, the author concludes that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics as part of their treatment. To support his claim the author cites a study of two groups of patients: One group of patients was treated for muscle injuries by a doctor who specializes in sports medicine and took antibiotics throughout their treatment. Another group of patients was treated by a general physician and took sugar instead of antibiotics in their treatment. The study indicates that the recuperation of patients taking antibiotics is quicker than typically expected, while the recuperation of patients taking sugar is not significantly reduced. The argument seems logical. However, a careful examination can reveal how groundless it is.
First of all, these two groups of patients in the study may not be comparable. There might be great difference between them. Perhaps, patients going to see Dr. Newland are younger on average or less serious in the degree of muscle strain than those going to see Dr. Alton. As we know, younger patients recover quicker than old ones and it takes longer time for patients with more serious muscle train to rehabilitate themselves. Without ruling out those differences affecting the recuperation rate of patients with muscle strain, the arguer cannot base on the study to draw his conclusion.

Secondly, whether there were other differences in the two doctors’ treatments besides using antibiotics and sugar pills is unclear, which might have been the actual cause of the difference in recuperation time. Dr. Newland an expert in sports medicine is likely to have more experience in treating muscle strain than the general physician. Did Dr. Newland only use antibiotics to treat those patients? Maybe, he also described other drugs or let patients do some light sports to release their muscle. So it is entirely likely that it is other drugs or related therapies that decrease the recuperation time not antibiotics.
Thirdly, even if antibiotics do contribute to the treatment of muscle strain, it does not mean that all patients with muscle strain can rely on it to recover. As we know, some patients are allergic to antibiotics such as penicillin. For them, taking antibiotics is not necessarily helpful, on the contrary, may exaggerate their disease.
All in all, the conclusion is made too hasty and the evidence cited in this newsletter lends litter support to what the author want to maintain. Before we make conclusion about the effect of antibiotics for patients with muscle strain, more research must be took. Only in this way, is it responsible for both patients and the medical science.
