Argument 65
1 First of all, the president provides no evidence that the newest store is representative of all other stores of the chain in Unite States.
2 Secondly, the president bases his conclusion on a recent survey which indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among the subscribers of the World magazine. However, the survey is not representative of all the people,
3 Thirdly, reducing expense by limiting inventory of imported cheesed does not necessarily indicate that the profits in all stores will be improved.
In the memo, the president concludes that to improve profits in all of their chain stores selling cheeses they had better discontinue stocking the imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. To support his claim, he points out the fact that last year the five best-selling cheeses of the newest store were all domestic cheeses. The president also cites a recent survey which indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among the subscribers of the World magazine. At the same time, the president alludes that they can reduce expenses by limiting inventory of imported cheeses. This memo suffers from a series of poor assumptions, which render it wholly unpersuasive as it stands.
First of all, the president provides no evidence that the newest store is representative of all other stores of the chain in Unite States. The mere fact that the five best-selling cheeses at the newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin did not indicate that other stores also experienced the same phenomenon. However, it is entirely possible that besides the newest store other ones sole imported cheeses better than domestic cheeses. Therefore, it is unreasonable to conclude that in the Unite States domestic cheeses is more popular than imported ones. Moreover, even if the newest store reflected the real taste of people last year, this trend will be not necessarily continuing. Maybe in the next years, new kinds of imported cheeses will come into being and more satisfy with the people’s taste.
Secondly, the president bases his conclusion on a recent survey which indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among the subscribers of the World magazine. However, the survey is not representative of all the people, because all the respondents are the subscribers of World magazine. The president offers no evidence that people besides those subscribers also like domestic cheeses. It is likely that more people all over the nation are fond of imported cheeses than subscribers of World magazine. If this is the case, the dominated taste will be the imported cheeses rather than domestic ones.
Thirdly, reducing expense by limiting inventory of imported cheesed does not necessarily indicate that the profits in all stores will be improved. It is equally likely that the profits from selling imported cheese usually outweigh the expenses of inventory, since all the stores have supplied imported cheeses for many years. If this is true, discontinuing stocking imported cheeses may not help increase the total profits of all stores, on the contrary, maybe decrease the profits.
To sum up, the evidence cited in this memo lends little support to what the president want to maintain. To strengthen this memo, the president would have to provide more evidence to substantiate the representation of the new store and the survey. To assess the memo more fairly, we need detailed information about the profits got from selling imported cheeses and the charges of the inventory.
