TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
Should all faculty be demanded to spent time working outside the academic world in professions related to what they teach so that to improve the quality of instruction, as the speaker maintains? In my point of view, the speaker over generalize the necessity for all the numbers of faculty to take part in occupations in outside world. And more importantly, the speaker overlooks the possible drawbacks as a result of such a claim.
To begin with, concerning about engaging in professions relevant to the courses the members of faculty teach, one would question whether all the members of the faculty could possibly find such professions. Some realms of academic world, such as philosophy and history, the knowledge from neither areas could be applied directly to the modern industrialized world. Were there no professions related to the courses taught by some members of the faculty, how could it be possible that they spend time working outside the college and university. It is far better off, therefore, for the benefit of both the students and these part of faculty, that these docents or professors to simply concentrate on the academic field they are indulging in, rather than trying to take jobs related to what they teach.
Although in some realms of academic world, as stated above, it is not appropriate for faculty to engaging in work outside the college and university, in some areas, it is possible, even necessary for the related faculty to spend time on professions relevant to the area they teach. One vivid example comes from the ecological professor of my own. As he joins his research domain to the pressing problems faced by today's society, our interest in ecology has soared at an all time high. It is known to almost everyone today that the earth is as risk, great partly as the result of the activities of human beings. Merely knowledge in books and labs cannot solve these problems. Our teacher produces a substitute fuel for petrol we mainly use today, and many managers and businessmen are interested in these subjects or already have reached a contrast with my teacher. In fact, what we learn at class cannot equip us well enough to plunge in work or research that we may set about to undertake tomorrow. By setting an empirical example, our teacher shows us how to embrace knowledge with utilization, boost our passion for studying ecology.
As for some other areas, such as law and computer science, on balance I agree that it is useful for faculty major in these realms of academia to spend time working outside school. Keeping in touch with the work in social life, the faculty can provide students with the most up-to-date information which can both enlarge the students' knowledge and provide current trends on the situations of job market.
However, requiring faculty spending time working outside the academic world has its own drawback, which without addressed probably may ruin the objective of the requirement. As my teacher as I mentioned above, he is sometimes more inclined to the business than the teaching, and even absent form work at times, as by means of advocating the benefits of his product, he can earn much more money than the university offers. This inevitably leads to the decline in the quality of instruction as last, and the ultimate victims are us, the students.
In sum, the speaker overstates the requirement for all faculty to work outside the academic world. Were the courses are mainly about theories, these faculty should not be required to take jobs outside university. On the other hand, as the courses taught by professors or decants are closely related to the outside college business, it will improve the quality of instruction as long as some possible consequences are well taken care of.
