TOPIC: ISSUE177 - "The study of an academic discipline alters the way we perceive the world. After studying the discipline, we see the same world as before, but with different eyes."

When talking about the function of the study of an academic discipline, in my view, it is not only can alter the way we perceive our world but at the same time can help us to change the world itself. Then we can achieve a thoroughly knowledge of the existing universe and lead us a convenient life.

On the one hand,  through the constantly study and research in different field of academic discipline, including nature science and humanity, people will gradually change or modify their viewpoint toward the objective-world and also subjective-world, such as how human came into being or what is the center of the universe.  Take the latter one as an example, at sixteenth century, Ptolemaic theory dominated the astronomy. Most People considered that the earth was the centre of the world which coherent with the religious believes except a polish astronomer, Copernicus. After studied the astronomy decades of years, he finally postulated that the earth and other planets revolved about a stationary sun by his heliocentric theory, which revolutionized science and refresh people's eye. Hundred years later, watching through the Hubble Space Telescope, we have known that the earth and the sun, even the solar system is merely a grain of sand in the endless universe. Hence, along with the studying of academic discipline, people can eventually talk, listen, and act in the more comprehensive aspects.

Further, in addition of obtain a large of amount of information and knowledge, the significance of studying the academic discipline also let people know the importance of the critical thinking. When considering the development history of the science, we recognized that there was something we used believed true proved ridiculous later just like the instance we illustrated above. In fact, at any time any place we have lot of thing remain unknown, such as where the edge of the universe is or how the first anthropoid turn into human. In a scene, the more modest the more objective and clearer we perceive the world.

On the other hand, contributing to the scientific research achievements, people also rebuild the extant world obviously and generate some feedback that impacted the way we perceive the world. For instance, the Internet or the World Wide Web, a computer-based network of information resources that combines text and multimedia based on the advancement in technology of electronic engineering and the telecommunication skills. With the aid of it and a computer, anyone can access and search the information freely. It is hardly to imagine that we can visit the British Museum and go on a course in MIT just click the button on your IE browser. And it has totally changes people conception of traditional way of life, and makes a tremendous effort to the scientific research

All in all, the study of academic discipline shapes our perspective toward the world, give us the ability to be more critical when confronted to the problem, and enrich our world at the same time.
