TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS: 427         TIME: 0:38:30          DATE: 2007-2-13

With the increasing rapid pace of life comes the growing craving for communications. Immersed in the raptures that mass media, especially the television, has created, a huge number of people—including the speaker—seem to accept the perspective that the television has rendered the books obsolete. However, in my opinion, both the television and books are vital to our modern life: the new technology explores a new way in some respects while books take important roles in other respects.

On one hand, the television is one of the most flamboyant technological inventions and brings a new way in which we learn countless knowledge to our daily life. For the purpose of conveying certain spatial and temporal events, it has its unique advantages. For example, it is impossible for any book, no matter how precise its pictures and detailed its language, to recount in complete and precise processes such events as exploration in ancient city. By watching a TV program, one can be inspired not only by the archeologists who unearth the remains and segments in an ancient city, but also by the biochemists' analyzing in the blood, bones, teeth and hair of a mummified body. Even a creative and imaginative mind could not recount the pictures of an ancient civilization from a book.

On the other hand, the comparatively disadvantages in some other respects of the television decide that it gives its way to televisions under certain circumstances. A book can afford us not only the convenience and the joy of browsing, but also the balanced, compete and unfiltered knowledge. It is entire possible that with the advent of newer technology, television could become the same light, convenient and even not break and not relying on electricity as a book, but what can not be changed involves the forces that motivates the television as a media. For the purpose of appealing to the widest viewing audience and then maximize the profit, the manages of television programs seem to focus on the programs that cater to the tastes of audience and appeal to our emotions and feelings rather than our intellect and reasoning—what the books can affords us well.

No one can avoid being influenced by such mass media as television and videos while no one can avoid being affected by the virtues of reading. Television decorates our dining rooms while books enrich our studies, and what the same characteristic they own is the fact that they both meet our overwhelming desire for knowledge and bring a long way to our hope, love, and even modern civilization.

文章结构很明晰,但是我觉得内容匮乏了点,各自的优点可以分许多段来多写几个方面,这样也可以体现详略得当。语言是没得说,不过小错误不要犯阿
