Issue50
In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
1 In the first place, certain experience of working outside the academic world can enrich teachers’ knowledge and help them better understand their subjects.
2 In the second place, working outside can help teachers improve their teaching methods.
3 Admittedly,
As we know, knowledge we learn from textbooks should be put into practice. Otherwise it will be worthless. The changing situation outside campus should be indicated in our classes. So there comes a claim that all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in profession relevant to the courses they teach in order to ameliorate the quality of instruction at the college and university level. I agree that conclusion broadly. However, overemphasizing working outside the academic world will be harmful.
In the first place, certain experience of working outside the academic world can enrich teachers’ knowledge and help them better understand their subjects. Nowadays, we are in the era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing the rate of updating knowledge. New theory and new technology in practical world come into being everyday, while knowledge keeps stable in textbooks. Teachers working outside their academic field have the chance to grasp such new knowledge and broaden their horizon. At the same time, some knowledge in our textbooks is obscure and it is hard to understand them thoroughly but when applied to the practical jobs, it will be more understood as the old saying goes: learning by doing is a best way to study. So teachers can amplify their knowledge scope and understand them utterly by working outside. Additionally, in the job market it is easy for teachers to realize what kinds of knowledge are needed. With the plenty knowledge and better understanding of knowledge, teachers can organize their teaching well according to the changing condition of outside world and teach their students what is useful in our life.
In the second place, working outside can help teachers improve their teaching methods. Teachers experiencing working outside always introduce concrete and vivid examples from job fields in their classes to illustrate what they want to convey and make the class atmosphere lively. As students, we all have such an experience that lively courses usually capture our attention. Take Xu Hong, a famous professor in our university for example, is just a man who concentrates on his academic research all day and all night. Although he has got great achievement in his field, there are few students willing to choose his courses for dreary class atmosphere. As a scholar, he is very successful, however, as a university teacher, he is not so excellent due to his disability in introducing practical instruction and stimulating the interest of his students. So standing on the lectern all the time may be useless sometimes.
Admittedly, the fact that working outside the academic world help teachers instruct their students does not mean that teachers can working outside all the time and pay no attention to their course. Everybody has only 24 hours, if he spends most of them working outside, little will remain for him to prepare for teaching. Without full preparation for teaching, the quality of instruction will be affected.
To sum up, for teachers, some working experience outsider academic world can bring some new ideas and inspiration to classes and improve the quality of instruction. However, indulging in working outside for money or other temptations will do harm to the teaching process.

However, indulging in working outside for money or other temptations will do harm to the teaching process.(最后最好提出一个观点:课堂内外最好相结合,达到最佳效果)
