Argument200
In this argument the arguer claims that dentists should advertise to the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering. To support this argument the arguer cites statistics which indicate that the number of men fainting while visiting the dentist is three times as much as that of women. Then the arguer makes a conclusion that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women and those men will concern more about the effectiveness of the anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of dentists’ staff. As the following discussion shows, the arguer’s argument is not well supported by the evidence.
In the first place, the statistics collected from dentists may not be reliable. The arguer fails to mention the proportion of men and women visiting the dentists. It is likely that men patients are more than women patients. If this is the case, it is natural that during the investigation more men fainting than women. Therefore, the mere fact three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentists cannot suggest that men are more likely to faint than women.
In the second place, even if men are more easily to faint than women, it is also unsafely concluded that the fainting of men is due to their nervousness. The arguer provides no evidence that it is men’s distress that caused their fainting. Perhaps, those men visiting the dentists are in bad healthy conditions and they also faint on the road in the strong sunshine. If this is true, the effectiveness of anesthetic techniques and sensitivity of dentists’ staff may not help kill men’s nervousness too much.
Last but not least, since women can also faint while visiting the dentists, it is unwise for dentists who advertise to attract patients only target the male consumers. So if the dentists only advertise to men, they will lose some businesses from females.
In sum, the argument is unpersuasive as it stands, to strengthen the conclusion, the arguer would have to provides more evidence that the statistics is reliable and there is a causal relationship between men’s fainting and nervousness.
