ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
1 Admittedly, 研究历史不是那么profitable
2 Without question, those historic issues with obvious relevance to our daily lives benefit us greatly.
3 It is hard to determine whether certain historic events are relevant to our lives. From my standpoint of view, all the historic events have more or less contribution to our society even some of them are subtle.
The speaker claims that only when the study of history is relevant to our daily lives, it has value. As far as I am concerned I agree that the historic events relevant to our daily lives are very important. However, we cannot ignore the significance of those ones which seem to be not so close to us.
Admittedly, in our modern times, everything in the world is material-oriented and people's standards for values take on some practical and utilitarian characteristics. Unlike the fields of science and technology where once something original and useful is created, it may bring large fortunate to human beings the study of history seems to be not so profitable. So, people in our society often pay little attention to study history. However, throughout the recorded history, most people will agree that modern human beings are standing on the shoulders of our predecessors by the means of reading their books, utilizing their methods or inheriting their spirits. Therefore, whether the relevance to our daily lives is obvious or not we must pay enough attention to the study of history.
Without question, those historic issues with obvious relevance to our daily lives benefit us greatly. Our human history is an integrated book filled with all kinds of examples and illustrations. Retrospect from our history many great inventors are famous due to their contribution to our society. For those inventors, on the process of inventing they usually reflect some valuable characters such as diligence, persistence and innovation which are important for one to go to success. We can set those great men as our examples and encourage ourselves when we encounter difficulties. Moreover, studying history can help us repeat no mistakes which our ancestors had made. When exploring the world, our predecessors might use some inappropriate methods trying to get their aim then failed due to their limited development level. Under this condition, modern scientists usually realize the limitation of our ancestors and improve those research techniques to conduct their research. So by studying the wrong methods and thoughts of our ancestors we can avoid repeating the same mistakes and save our time.
It is hard to determine whether certain historic events are relevant to our lives. From my standpoint of view, all the historic events have more or less contribution to our society even some of them are subtle. As for those historic issues which seem to be far away from us and not so relevant to our daily lives, they still have profound significance to us. For instance, the cause of the twice War World has nothing to do with our current lives, but there are still many historians to pursue that. Because if we can find out the origin and cause of the wars, we are likely to deal with the conflicts between countries and individuals well and keep our society in a stable situation. Therefore, studying historic events which have not evident relevance to us also has its inner importance.
All in all, from history, a host of knowledge and experience can serve as guideline of today’s actions. The study of study is indispensable to the development of our society. No matter the relationship with us is we should not ignore the significance of it. |
