TOPIC: ARGUMENT38 - The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.

"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

The author gives us a method of preventing colds which make people use a drug made from fish called Inhthaid. The author points out the nearby town have a little number of people who catch cold and they eat large quantity of fish. So the author gives rise to the direct relationship between fish and cold. And he believes taking Inhtaid will let the possibility of catching cold be less in his town. However, that is no sense for this result at least for three reasons.

The first one is the relationship between fish and cold. Although the people eat a lot of fish indeed need less treatment of colds, there is not any data and truth can proof the relationship between them is cause and result.

The second one is Ichthaid which is derived from fish. Even if fish could decrease the number of fever paints, we have no ideas about which part of fish make effect. Maybe the effective part can not or does not be derived from fish oil. Then the direct result is the Icnthaid of no use, and it is a waste of time to using it as a way to preventing colds.

The last one is the differences between East Meria and the town in the letter. The method effective in East Meria may not have any affection on the other town. For the manners, geography, even the healthy situation of people maybe are totally different. Even a little difference could make things all wrong. So that should be considered before making choice.

In sum, the author deduces the result by no-sense reasons. To make things believable, he at least needs the data which can declare the fish amount causing a less number of fevers. And the function of Inchthaid should be considered, too. What is more, the different town usually would not have the same affection from the same thing. All in all, the result from the author is lack of believable confidences.
