It is true that the artist creates the art and brings the treasures to the whole society. And from the houses we live in (architecture) to the movies we see (theater) to the books we read (literature), art is a part of our daily lives. However, without critics, the arts might not even progress. Critics’ status in helping artist leave the lasting value art production should not be ignored.

Over the past time, many famous artists had created a lot of cultural inheritance to the society. What they fulfilled has already become the priceless treasure and would last forever in our history. Take Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael for example. From the born of “Mona Lisa”, how many people have been infatuated with her mysterious smile. When Michelangelo finished David, he was only 29 years old. The figure became the representation of strong and health. The work of Raphael---La scuola di Atene---shows the height of Athens’ cultural achievements and imperial power. These three artists and their works are just like stars in the history.

However, we cannot neglect the function of critics in the progress of arts. Without the correct evaluation of critics, the artist might not realize his/her flaws and in which part should he/she practice more. In other ways, critics spread the art to general people. They translate the thought in artists’ works, teach them what is beautiful and how to enjoy beauty. What’s more, critics bring competition to the art and make it have the power to progress.

It’s confessed that although some work might be around the criticism at the first time, the true value will finally be recognized by the posterity. Vincent Van Gogh was one of the most famous artists in the world. He sold only one work when he was alive and his work were not accepted by critics. Even his favorite artists and his friends at that time could not understand his painting and some even evaluate his painting as nothing, which finally leaded to his crazy. After a hundred years since his death, his painting was bought for sixty million dollars by a huge Japanese corporation and locked away in a climate-controlled vault.

In sum, it is artists that bring the society the treasure which have lasting value. It is also critics that help art keep progressing. When we surprise by the great work of artists, at the same time we should not ignore the contribution of critics.
