ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."
In this report, the author claims that the university should give Professor Thomas a $10000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson, in order to keep she continue work in this university. To substantiate this assumption, the author cites the face that Professor THomas' classes are the largest, also the author give out information about her annual salary and the money she has brought to the university. However, it is unconvicing as it stands.
At first, the author cites the fact that Professor Thomas' classes are among the largest class at the university to support the assumption that Professor Thomas is so popular among the students. However, as we think carefully, there is no relationship between the two things. It is entirly possible that her classes are so large only because the university just let her teach such large number of students. It is also possible that her classes are so many students only because the lesson her teachs is so important that the students have to have the class. Without giving out the detail information about Professor Thomas' class, the assumption is unsubstantiated.
secondly, the author claims that the money she has brought to the university in reseach grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last years. However, this evidence can support nothing. She is has been a professor of botany for seventeen years, the evidence only tell us the situation in last two years, as the author does not tell us another years' situation, the evidence is unuseful to support this argument. Also, the author does not give out the situation of other professors. The evidence has no persuasion as we cannot compare Thomas' ability with other professors' in bringing money to university, because is entirely possible that other professor can bring much more money than Thomas but their annual salary are less than Thomas'.
In the third place, the author claims that the university should give Professor Thomas a $10000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson, in order to keep she continue work in this university. But the author does not give out any information about other universities. In this case, we cannot make any recommendation that Thomas will leave the university, because it is highly possible that other university won't give her as much salary as $50000.
In conclusion, the recommendation the author claims are unsubstantiated. To convice me that the university should give Professor Thomas a $10000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson, the author need to provide clear information about the other professors' salary and the clear evidence about her popularity among students.
