TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS: 693          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2007-2-23

The twenty-first century witnesses the rapid development of telecommunication and information technology, which, in turn, leads to the widely spread of television. It, hence, often causes debates and most of them are over the issue: whether or not people can learn as much from television as from books. I agree that televisions have been an important means for people to absorb information insofar as they are more vivid and sensitive to the latest events. However, in some aspects, there is no substitute for books.

To begin with, people can learn much from television by means of its vivid image. It is universally acknowledged that animation has much more attraction than stationary image or text. Particularly, compared to books, television are more vivid and animated. Thus, people would show a burning passion and interest in seeing television. For supporting examples, one need look no further than children. While it is true that a child would soon be distracted when reading some boring books, it is common that a child sits in front of a television all day. It is image and video that attracts this child. Therefore, in the long run, the television will exert profound influence on this child. If we put something useful and instructive into the programs of television, it is highly possible that this child will learn from the programs, the same as reading a book. As a result, in a more vivid way, television is able to provide the same information as books sometimes.

Furthermore, aside from the advantage of vivid image, television is sensitive to the latest events, so that people are able to learn the latest information from television. As a general rule, it takes quite a long time to publish a book, from collecting material, organizing text, printing and selling. When people get a book, the content in it might be out of date. In contrast, information in television is always keeping up with era. Due to the latest technologies, television is more efficient and fast and is able to convert events into video in several minutes. This statement brings immediately to minds news. As we know, people were able to see news about presidential election in television simultaneously; they might read the same information on newspaper next day; and they have to wait nearly several months to find a book covering this process. In this case, television shows much advantage in speed. Thus, it is television that those, who want to absorb the latest information, prefer.

However, there are some advantages of books that can not be substituted by television. Because books are made of paper, they are cheaper and more portable. Especially the advantage in price attracts a great number of readers from television. For example, in some countries in China, people are too poor to have adequate furniture, let alone television. Nonetheless, books are cheap enough for them to buy and thus become the major means to absorb information. In addition, owing to television's size and weight, it cannot be moved easily; however, books are quite light. Therefore, we might see people reading books everywhere, in buses, in offices, and even on the roads. As people like, they are able to absorb information continually with the help of books. In all, books have their idiosyncratic advantage in providing continual information for us.

On balance, by taking advantage of both books and televisions, we are able to learn much more. Although with the help of television's vivid image and latest information, we are able to keep up with era, this information is not enough. It is necessary for us to read books to deepen our understanding, especially some abstract conception, which is difficult to express in television. For instance, in some schools, at the beginning of a class, teacher would allow students watching some programs about the teaching material in television. Then he or she imparts relevant abstract ideas to students. Such teaching method not only attract student's interest and provide a general understanding on what will be taught, but also give them deeper perspective.

To sum up, without television, we are not able to get information vividly; without books, we cannot understand deep. We will benefit from the combination of these two.
