TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

提纲：尽管电视越来越多地进入人们的生活，读书仍然是学习的更好的方式。

1书上能够得到的知识很多不能在电视中学习到

（1）书籍能够更大的激发人的想象力

（2）很多先哲的名言无法用电视节目来表达

（3）语法和修辞只有在书上才能够得到更好的发展

2 电视更大的功能在于娱乐，而不是学习。

3 另外，书籍方便携带，这也更适合人们随时随地的学习。

总之，电视和书籍都很重要，任何一个都不能完全取代另一个。我们要好好把握学习的方法。

People nowadays always compare book with television to choose a better way of study. Some think the television plays a part in study as important as book. However, I do not agree with them. I admit the advantages of television, and I deem it people can learn much from television. But the function of books and televisions could never be at the same level.

On one hand, much knowledge we get from book could not get from television. Firs of all, book usually encourages people using their imagination, while television is weaker on that. The words in book are more reserved than the playings on television, and people can hypothesis the characters and scenes in the book relying on their own imagination. But once those characters are on TV acted by real persons, it becomes the imagination of the director. In that case, normal people lose chance to image those things by themselves, but have to accept the product made by TV. Secondly, books record so many meaningful words by celebrities, which could not show soundly on TV. Such as Bacon's book, how could a program play it and prove itself has understood the soul of the book? Finally, the perfect rhetoric and beautiful syntax could only learn from books. As a delicate verse appear in your eyes on paper, the precise word and dazzling rhyme will make you fell under the spell of it. But the television could not do it.

On the other hand, television itself is a tool for entertainment more than study. Look through the television programs, how many of them are playing for recreation and how many of them are teaching people knowledge or truth? Unfortunately, the foregoing occupies most. There are so many programmers on TV, so it takes time to choose meaningful programs among them. And there are so many information on TV that people sometimes maybe in a quandary when they are choosing. That is a waste of time. Only if people is really sensitive and have a clearly gain could make it. So it is difficult to believe that people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books at the same time.

What is more, books are convenient for carrying. We can take them out with us, and when we feel boring at a bus stop or in a long time trip we can read them. I myself always carry a book with me. When I get to an unknown place, I do not know whether it will be exciting, then the book will be my first choice if it is uninteresting. In fact, we can also improve ourselves during the time, so why not? But we can not take a television with us all the time. It is unrealistic. I have some friends get the opportunities to teach in the poorest areas in the world which support the education there, and some of these places even provide no light. All of they take many books to there to prevent from boring. As a result of a research made by United Nation, there are still lots of areas in our world do not have the condition to watch television, and many of them even do not have light. As a matter of fact, books are indeed handier than television.

In conclusion, books and television are both important in our daily life. If we give up reading, our lives will be lacking depth. If we do not watch television, our lives will be boring. A sensitive person knows how to get balance between them, and that is the best way of learning.
