Is reading books still important as it once was in the age of television? The speaker claims that the importance of reading books has declined significantly as a result of the fact that people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. From my perspective, it is true that televisions are superior to books under some circumstances; however, books are more advantageous than televisions in most aspects when it comes to learning.
Admittedly, television is an appropriate way to have access to certain types of knowledge and events thanks to its characteristic of being lively and timely. Take Olympic Games for an example, by watching the vivid images and background sounds in the field through television, we can better appreciate the competition as well as perceive the same exciting atmosphere during the process of competing. What is more, it seems that we can get acquaintance to the latest news by watching television rather than by reading books or newspapers. Simply put Olympic Games for an example again, if one is desirous to know the results of track and field, or the ranking of the medals of his or her countries, at first hand, then turning on the television will be the advisable choice. In one word, television has some merit in spreading the lately events fast and live.
However, on the other hand, one can learn most profound knowledge by reading books but by watching television which makes it significant. As we know, television is controlled by the production manager and other certain personnel in TV stations. Hence, the programs are inevitably influenced by the ideas and interests of the producers, which is adverse for us to comprehend the facts. The historical event is a case in point. By reading books, one can find out what the history actually is and produce deeply thoughts and judgments without any other influences. In short, reading books is beneficial to learning, especially it terms of deep thinking.
In addition, books also have several inherent superiorities to television, which is neglected by the speaker. First, books are far more portable than television sets so that they are suitable for commuters. Second, books do not cling to the environment, such as electricity, signal, altitude and so forth—all of which have much to do with televisions. Third, one can choose the order of reading while it is unlikely to change the sequences of programs freely with reference to the television. Also, one can keep books as collections and read them repeatedly, which is not available in television. With such advantages, it is hard to say that reading books are not of importance as it was nowadays.
All in all, in my point of view, although television has its merit concerning certain events; however, reading books is more superior to watching television as a facility of learning knowledge result from its irreplaceable benefit to stimulate original and insightful thinking. Therefore, reading books is, and will always be, significant in people's life.
