题目:ISSUE36 -"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live afterthem, not by their contemporaries."
Outline
Can the great contributions of individualsbe decided simply by those who belong to a latter time, as the speaker asserts? In my opinion, I disagree with the speaker's claim in some respects, eventhough the contemporaries were always limited by their knowledge and outmodedsenses. Resolving social problems and contributing to a better society, somefamous individuals were often identified by those living around them.
Admittedly, in the realm of art, many ofelites were unable to be judged objectively by their contemporaries who failsto understand the greatness of certain individuals, since ideas of such elites'great works always beyond those contemporaries traditional comprehension oreven their imagination. Consider, many distinguished artists , includingBeethoven, Schubert, Vangoh and so on. They incline to express a special and profoundunderstanding of society by means of their own works. Yet, such emotions werealways not clear and not consistent with the situation of the whole society atthat time. Apparently, it is hard for those populace to comprehend the innermeaning. Such works were considered as ludicrous or intricate. Easily understand background and condition ofthose artists, the latter person no doubt can decide their significantcontributions instead of the contemporaries.
Moreover, without justidentification and enough regard, these famous individuals may were discontinueto their works. Many of them were very poor during their all lives, as aresult, they always make certain works catering to some richer to maintaintheir standard of living or pursue comfort lives. For instance, Van Gogh soldlots of paintings for some bread and milk. list often was invited to play pianofor nobles. Such art works can not manifest their own real emotions and reflecton real opinion of the negative aspects of society during that time. Accordingly, such work lose true value as a work of art and those artists spending too muchtime and energy on these wastes fails to create real invaluable works.
On a scientific basis, however, thosefamous scientists' great fruit of hard research could be acknowledged duringtheir time, especially when such technology can be applied to solving manysocial problems such as poverty, violence and environment pollution. For example, Watson and Crick found a spiralmodel, the double helix, for the molecular structure of DNA. they were rewardedNobel Prize for their advances in the study of genetics. More and More commonpeople are aware of the importance of genetic research, which is used toengineer away people undesirable aspects of human being such as aggression andgreed and highly enhance production of kinds of crops to resolving hungry problem. Thus the contemporaries would regard their discovery as great and useful ratherthan merely consider it as a waste of taxpayer dollars, irrelative of theirdaily lives.
In sum, I concede that varieties of famous individualscan not be judged objectively by the contemporaries for their own restrictionof understanding in some respects. While ,in other cases , many elites have enjoyedsufficient recognition by the people living during their time.
