TOPIC: ISSUE41 - "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."

Some nonmainstream areas of inquiry try to explain the mysterious natural phenomena and predict the future in the way that distinctive from mainstream science. Until now, many people rely on this kind of inquiry area to foresee their future and make their decisions. In my stand of point, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry can satisfy individual’s curiosity about the world and future to some extent, but it is perilous for them if indulging in it blindly.

Admittedly, these nonmaintream has developed in a long historic process,. From 3000.BC. in Babylonia, from 2000 B.C. in China, astrology, for example, originally through observing certain astronomical bodies, noticed their effect towards seasons and success of crops. This achievement efficiently helps the farmers to adjust their planting time through the observation result of the astrology.

The most significant meaning of these nonmainstream areas is to comfort people who are worry about their future. It is no doubt that almost everyone feels uncertainty, insecurity, and confusion in real life which accounts for why they eager to know their future's fate. In addition, the person whose relatives die suffer much about the loss of kin and the fear of death, when informed about the next possible happy life by the fortune-tellers or somebody else , will release their lament. From another aspect, the nonmainstream inquiry also satisfies both the demands of the rulers and those being ruled. As for the rulers, those areas serve as an essential tool for maintaining the social order, for the lack of convincing science and wholesome national law. To government their citizens firmly, they always promoted a kind of nonmianstream subject to convince their citizens to obey, especially in ancient times. And as for those being ruled, taking the ancient China for example, the astrology connected the rising of sun from the east with the born of the emperor which was considered as the intention of god by masses, and unconditional follow their domination, no matter how cruel and bloody.

However, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry does not play a vital role in society, because they are fundamentally some pseudoscience which renders people of delusion, self-deception, false hopes, and unlimited fantastic ideas. For instance, either in the end of East Han Dynasty or in the ancient Rome, the emperors exclusively believed the fortune-teller’s irresponsible remarks to smelt the elixirs which did not only consume a lot of wealth but also diverse the emperors' attention from politics to fantastic ideas. What is more, it cannot be deny that many of these inquiries were taken advantage by charlatans to deceive the dupe and thus kite their money in a seemingly scientific way. Moreover, for example, if someone told me in advance that I can do well in the GRE splitting text, and if I believe it, and finish the test at ease, which may totally impact on my performance negatively for my carelessness.

In sum, no matter what have nonmainstream areas of inquiry brought to us, we still should carfully identify that they cannot satisfy all human desire and prevent their unfavourable power on human mentality.
