"Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive, because it is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated."
Although major cities are playing a role of preserving a nation’s cultural traditions, some small ones and even some rural places are doing the same things, so governments should ensure both of them to receive the financial support they need in order to thrive.
Big cities, especially those have a long history such as Beijing, Kyoto and so on, are preserving the splendid tradition of their nation and of course demanding amounts of money to thrive. Kyoto, the only major city of Japan to be spared from the bombs of World War II, has long stood for preservation, where the historic district hasn’t changed its look much in thousands of years and still boasts dozens of serene temples, shrines, wooden homes and even two Imperial Palaces. Every year, lots of money are paid, by the government, to remedy the classic Japanese architectures in Kyoto so that the city will look like a museum which conserves the traditional way of Japanese life from drastic cultural change. Beijing, another city used to live emperors in the past, seems to enjoy its modern image as a world-famous metropolis by holding the 2008 Olympic Games and it is said that the government will spend several billion of dollars on that programs(北京enjoy its modern image感觉是个反例,应该在前面加In contrast). Hence, these two examples show us that major cities which hold the nation’s cultural traditions should be financial support for their further development.
However, some small towns will also be capable of generating cultural traditions, on which the payment could be a really good investment. Angouleme, a southwest French town which has a population of only 40,000, containing many interesting reminders of its historical significance as a fortress town 7 centuries ago, has become the capital of European comics since its annual International Comics Festival beginning at 1974. This vivid town has accomplished a transformation from a historic fortress to a center of European comics during the past 30 years, and this transformation could be viewed as a process of generating cultural traditions. Many comic studios are attracted to reside in it, some artistic schools of comics are established and a national comic museum is built, all of the above are benefit from the government’s policies and financial supports. Now, this small town is visited annually by 200,000 tourists, five times than its citizens, and the France government is still investing on it.
In fact, it is not the size of a city that could determine whether it may preserve or generate cultural traditions. Big cities may be nothing more than chaos, and small villages might be an intact preservation of a nation’s cultural traditions. The government should support both the major cities and the small villages as long as they could stand for the nation’s past or new traditions.
我有个想法,因为LZ认为governments should ensure both of them to receive the financial support they need in order to thrive但仅仅举出了major cities和small towns的两方面的例子而没有太多的论证,不知道可不可以,我也想与LZ探讨一下,因为我也有这个疑问
不过单从例子上看确实很有说服力,语言没什么毛病而且很好
我无法挑出什么问题
