TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
WORDS: 376 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-3-22
The speaker asserts that the research on histroy has the meaning only to the extent that it is related to day-to-day lives of people. I concede that historical research which is close to people's normal life is very useful and urgent, however, this is not to say the study of history beyond our daily lives has no values.
First of all, in the aspect of military, the study of past wars can help us to absorb precious experience and lessons, and therefore lead to a military victory. Consider, for example, a great book "The Art of War", written by ancient Chinese strategist Sun Ztu. It is a collection of past wars and containing a great many wise strategies and lessons happened in those wars. Although the book is far beyond our daily lives, it is very valuable for military commanders when they are going to make decisions in a war, since they can avoid repeated mistakes due to the book. Thus, the study of historical wars which is not related to our daily lives has value in military.
Adittionly, in scientific world, great discoveries and significant advancement are based on the previous work over the history, and they are critical to the development of the society. For example, Maxwell equations might never be completed by physicist James Clerk Maxwell without the introduction of the partial differeniate equations, which is a branch of mathematics. This great advancement which is far beyond our daily lives is essential to the invention of mobil communications.
Last but not the least, the study of relationship between human beings and natural environment over the history is beneficial to everyone on the face of the earth, especially for our offspring, although, very often,it is not related to our daily lives. For example, the study to the nuclear lecage event happened in the Three Mile Island help us to understand the effects between human beings and nuclear material. Also, the study of previous oil spill event, and the disintegration of the ozen layer enable us to protect human beings from disasters which might happen in the future.
To sum up, the study of history which is beyond our daily lives is important to everyone all over the world. People should pay attention to it. |
