题目:ISSUE155 - "Contemporary society offers so many ways of learning that reading books is no longer very important."
Contemporary society with fast technological development can offer many different ways of acquiring information and knowledge. Televisions, the Internet and countless other media forms widely spread and covered almost every family in society. The speaker asserts that these means of browsing information seems to be also a suitable way of learning knowledge and therefore maybe a substitute for books. On the contrary, I definitely don't agree with such a statement and believe that books can never fade out in human society.
Admittedly, televisions and the Internet are the most powerful tools for containing and delivering huge amount of information including knowledge. Plenty of information do not necessarily ensure a proper way of learning. People usually learn what they are interested in from the information on TV or the Internet with ease. However, is learning information equal to learning knowledge? The answer is definitely not. To some degree, television broadcasting is a commercial business. they are supported by sponsors who want to earn more money. At the same time, audiences are more likely to prefer entertainment program than knowledge based program, thus TVs shows far more entertainment program than the later one. So there is little chance for people who want to fulfill their mind with knowledge by watching TV.
As to the Internet, besides the similar problems to TVs, information on the Internet fail to be well organized and are messed up. People often suffered great inconvenience while looking for the useful information they need. Another setback of the Internet is that because of lack of supervising, some negative or unhealthy contents which may poison the mind of young people can be accessed on the Internet. So the Internet is not a proper way of learning knowledge either.
When turning our attention to books, we can find that they conquer the flaws of televisions and the Internet mentioned above completely and are still important to learning. On the one hand, almost every book is written about an definite issue. These make you not only find the book you are interested in easily by a glance at the title but also learn a relative whole image of the knowledge. This advantage to TVs and the Internet also prevents young people from the unhealthy contents. On the other hand, being different from the audiences of TV accepting information passively, readers can select the most useful part of a book to meet their knowledge gap effectively.
To sum up, although rapid technological development does offer many great options of acquiring information, according to the flaws of them, they can not become the substitute of book. These new tools and traditional books can serve as a better mean of learning together!
