Structure of CEED
CEED will be organized to fulfill its mission and purpose along lines of the overall University and College tripartite mission. Specifically, CEED will conduct:
Research
CEED will provide intellectual leadership and community collaboration, including the transaction between basic applied research support and research and evaluation activities in early education and development that are based on contemporary theory and research that is interdisciplinary and community-based, and that addresses problems of policy and practice while at the same time informing theory and basic knowledge. We see a distinctive role for CEED in the design, administration, and conduct of these activities, with links to research, policy, and practice and a close integration to teaching and outreach that is not available at other universities nor in other units of the University of Minnesota.

Teaching
CEED will promote coordination and collaboration within and between instructional units at the University of Minnesota, other institutions of higher education, and other public and private training initiatives. Specific activities will include providing professional preservice and inservice training that reflects and informs research and service and an articulated set of interdisciplinary professional, preservice, inservice, and graduate training in administration, teacher, professional, and parent education, and research.

Outreach and Service
CEED will inform and respond to the broad community as well as to educators, child care providers, researchers, parents, policymakers, advocates, and others interested in early childhood education and development. Outreach and service will reflect and inform research and teaching and include provision of information regarding ongoing research, teaching, and policy developments ("value-added" activities); will provide information, referral, and service (including web-based services) in response to requests from others; and will provide leadership in the organization and conduct of discussions on current status and future directions of services and supports in early education and development.

Coordination and Leadership
CEED will provide structure for coordinating ongoing early childhood activities at the University of Minnesota and between the University and others, supporting ongoing activities and defining, initiating, and promoting new activities operated both by the Center and by other units of the University or agencies in the broader community.
