Split Personality Of Viscoelastic Materials
A simple experiment passed a cylinder through a viscoelastic material. Depending on the speed the cylinder moves, the material acts more like a fluid or more like a solid.


Something is either a gas or liquid orsolid right? Well not so fast ionized gas or plasma behave differently enough tobe thought of a separate form of matter. And some everyday things can cross theline, saliva, blood even toothpaste are viscoelastic materials, they can have theviscous behavior of fluid or the elastic behavior of solid and a simple experimentin the journal Physical Review Letters ?call the materials split personality. PennState researchers use the mixture of water soap and an organic salt to make a viscoelasticmaterial, they then pass the cylinder through the mix, if the cylinder moves slowly,they make its act as a fluid, a little faster though the cylinder actually cutsthe mixture, faster still and you get an even tearing, cutting in tearing spontaneouslyheal, but it is takes hours. Connecting the sort of state of the materials was theinteresting fact that the strength when acting like a solid is basically thesame as it's surface tension when acting as a liquid, that blood is sticker thanliquid waters that say solid conclusion.
