Cell phone is great except for one problem. If you forget to recharge the battery you might get a call without a working phone. But hey, if that phone signal can follow you all over the place, why can’t someone just beam some electricity at your phone? Well, researchers at MIT have taken a step to make that reality. They call it WiTricity for wireless electricity. And they were able to switch on a 60-watt light bulb from a power source 7 feet away without any wires. They did the trick by using a couple of resonance, which works because two objects with the same resonance frequency exchange energy very officially. Think of the opera singer who can make a wine glass explode. The MIT system relies on magnetic fields. A copper coil attached to a power source fills the space around with magnetic field to oscillate at particular frequency. A second receiving coil tuned to that frequency converts the magnetism back to electricity. So some day you might leave the house with a spent cell phone, and watch a recharge up as you walk on the street.

Veterans, especially wounded ones, also carry psyche scar of their war experiences. Those mental wounds can sometimes be fatal. A new study finds that former military personnel are twice likely to commit suicide as other people who never served. The study appears on the July issue of       Journal of epidemiology and community health. Those with the highest risk are veterans who were sidelined from home, work or leisure activities because of health issues. So doctors, friends and family members should be on extra alert for signs of suicide intentions in soldiers returning form Afghanistan and Iraq, especially wounded ones. The researches followed over 700000 veterans for 12 years. Some of the vets in the study went all the way back to WWI with the more recent vets having served at the first Iraq War in the early 1990’s. Some quirky findings in the study: overweight veterans were less likely to take their own lives than men of normal weight. But vets who were white older, better educated and never married were more likely to take their own lives than were people in the general population.

The study appears on the July issue of Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Those high risks with veterans were sidelined from home workers or leisure activities because of health issues. So doctors, friends, and family members should be on extra alert for signs of suicide intentions in soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, especially wounded ones. The researchers followed over 300 thousand veterans for 12 years. Some of the vets in the study were all the way back to WWI with more recent vets having served in the first war in early nineties. Some quirky finding in the study: overweighted veterans are less likely to take their lives than men of normal weight. But veteran who are white older, better educated, and never married, were more like to take their lives than the people in general population.

Who doesn't like a nice tightly sound(song) duet? Well you might not if you are(were虚拟语气)a bird calling(called) magpie-larks (magpie-lark) from Australian, and you heard a couple of other magpie-larks singing in(应该是a) highly precise duet. That's because well sound duet(song duets) indicate to other species members that the singing dual is working as (a) coordinated team to defend territory. That's according there (to) search(research) publish (published) in the June 5th issue of (the) journal Current Biology. Other animals do similar things. Lines(lions), chimps, wolves, they allwow or howl in choruses deter rivals in their big group. The magpie-larks make their standard(stand) with some complex rhythms. One bird sings the first the two notes and the second bird hear sounding like a bit farther(further) away answers with (a) quick retorted(retort).Weaker teams when you have just heard overlap or leave gaps between notes. The team singing improves the longer they work together and that tune may be a markfor their effectiveness as a team.

Some bad news and good news were reported in the lastweek from the world of natural products therapeutic. First the bad news, shark cartilage(extract与前面的词连读了) showed no benefits in thestudy with advanced lung cancer patients. Because shark cartilage doesn’t haveblood vessels, some researchers theorized(赞!) that the substance probably contains (a与前面的词连读了) blood vessel growth inhibitor which might help starved tumors with nutrients. But results presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology found (the) shark cartilage to be of no help. Now some better news. Another study reported at the meeting found that Americanginseng helped cancer patients who suffer from (an) extreme fatigue. And the amount of fatigue relief was dose-dependent, a good sign that wasn’t just placebo effect. An upcoming trial will try to establish an exact dosage. Finally an NIH funded study reported at Oncology meeting foundthat dietary flaxseed was effective in stopping the growth of prostate tumors.Flaxseed is rich in omega-3 fatty acids which may affect our cancer cellsattach to other cells. Flaxseed also contains lignin (应该是lignans木酚素) which may interfere with tumor’s blood vessel growth.
