这篇很简单，我只讲一下最后两句。

Although the Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens have all seen more than a twenty percent drop in smoking, Staten Island’s rate remained virtually unchanged.  Well, a lot of people think Staten Island should really be part of New Jersey.

1. 纽约市有5个区（Boroughs），这两句提到了4个，唯独没提到Brooklyn.  著名的唐人街在Lower Manhattan, 而Queens 的Flushing 地区有一个新的华人社区。注意，说the Bronx 的时候，一定要加定冠词the，它是地名的一部分。

2.   Staten Island 号称是the forgotten borough, 在地图上看起来好像是New Jersey州的一部分。区里的居民从80年代末开始，闹了很多年，要和纽约市分家，轰动全美，但最后没成功。这句话明显的是个小幽默。

如何用SA的材料准备托福

不好意思，容我多说两句，while I have my “15 minutes of fame” (此话有典故，这里有不少查资料高手可以帮忙查出来)。

很多朋友觉得自己三次以内还听不明白，很懊恼。其实大家别忘了，托福只让咱们听一遍，一遍就得拿下！听三次才明白的人，和听100次才明白的人，托福考分是一样的。

SA的材料最像integrated task的speaking question 6.  Speaking question 6 的lecture长度为60到90秒。另外两个integrated tasks也和它有关，即speaking question 4 and the integrated writing task (or writing task 1).

在此，我拿speaking question 6的情况来举例说明。托福考咱们能不能根据“听懂”的信息来回答问题，要求咱们用自己的语言复述，即“改述”（paraphrase）lecture里的concepts or issues.

因此使用SA材料比较好的做法是模拟speaking question 6：a) 一次性听完材料；b) 听的时候，快速并大量做笔记；c) 借助笔记，回忆材料内容，并用自己的语言写出够你60秒说话的内容；d) 之后你如果还想玩听抄可以接着玩。a, b, c三个动作一定要做，d可做可不做。听抄对练习听力有一定的帮助，但也有弊病，这个帖子里暂不讨论这个问题。有一点可以确定：经常做以上a, b, c的三个动作会直接帮助咱们提高托福考分，任何人在已有的听力基础上，都能从note-taking, paraphrasing的练习中，去提高答题能力。

其实跟帖的大牛，不见得是牛在听力，而是在整个英语的造诣。比方说，我客观地认为牛人kekdiguo“写作”肯定很好，但不知道她是否一遍就能听明白。大家看看她贴出来的文本，很难在里面找到语法的错误或是词句不通的地方，这说明她能把TOEFL writing 的最后一道工序revising and polishing做得很出色。我前面几次提供文本的时候，也花了很多精力在polishing上, 以争取写出来的文本没有错误，咱听力也只是一般般。

哈哈，说了半天，我只说了如何在既有的听力基础上提高托福答题能力，却没说出如何提高听力能力，下回吧。
