from wikipedia

Welterweight is a weight class division in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like kickboxing also began to use it for their own weight division system. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight.
A welterweight boxer weighs in at between 140 pounds and 147 pounds (63.5 kg and 66.7 kg). The weight limit fluctuated between 142 and 145 pounds until it was stabilized at 147 pounds during the reign of Jack Britton in 1920.

Back on our May 2nd episode, we talked about the brain damage suffered even by amateur boxers who wear headgear. Now imagine going into the ring bareheaded against a professional boxer or a world champion no less. Researchers at the University of Manchester in England were curious about just how much force a top boxer can generate with a punch. So they enlisted local boxer Ricky Hatton, an undefeated 28-year old light welterweight and welterweight world champ. And they had made a 30-kilogram punching bag with sensors attached. The results should make any spectators who figure they can last a while in the ring with a pro think again, because Ricky Hatton, whose nickname is “the Hitman”, generated a force of about 400 kilograms. An average person with no boxing training can generate only about one tenth that much force with a punch. Slow motion video found that Hatton can typically generate punch speeds of 25 miles per hour with one blow reaching 32mph. With that punch speed, you have about tenth of a second to react.

June 22, 2007: 60-Second Science

Here is one more reason not to smoke: a new study in the Journal of Orthopedic Research found that smoking interferes with ligament after injury. Anyway one place where people apparently are getting no smoking message is New York City. Between 2002 and 2006, the city saw its smoker rate go down by 20%. That is about a quarter million fewer smoking New Yorkers, that left 17.5% of the city still smoking, which is a lower rate than 45 states have. All these figures appeared in an article in the newest issue of Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Mobility and Mortality Report. It is available online at www.cdc.gov/mmwr. What prompted the decline? After decade long lack of the progress, in 2006 the city increase the tobacco taxes, prohibited smoking in most work places, and launched a major ad campaign. Although the Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens have all seem more than 20% drop in smoking, Staten Island’s rate maintained virtually unchanged. Well a lot of people think Staten Island should really be part of New Jersey.

listening --> understanding

Listening often misleads listeners, not as writing material.
Even when we pass an oral message to third part, we may miss or add or distort some of it.

Though new words frequently retard our understanding, we should not feel so frustrated. We should be aware that the valcabulary of English is immendous and seems endless. New words are generated quickly in sciences as well as in other fields. Even Americans prepared them with a dictionary or encyclopedia. Right now internet gives us unprecedent previlige to find the defination of a new word.

回复 #740 kelediguo 的帖子

众人皆醉我独醒。Kekediguo又对了。:)

Now imagine going into the ring bareheaded against a professional boxer—a world champion, no less.

“no less” 经常加在句尾,有点后想到,要补充、加强的味道。是个习惯用法,没有任何其它词(or, in)在前。

正确的用法是,说话时把重要的内容字world champion)说清楚(重读),顿一下,然后以降调(轻读),说出no less. 再放一遍录音,看看是不是如此。

这地方可以用托福听力题型Type 4understanding the function of what is said question)出一道题。比方说,what does the announcer mean when he says this? “a professional boxer—a world champion, no less.”

前面我提到,反复听,琢磨细枝末节是没有必要的,这便是一例。如果我们多看文章,早晚就会碰到这个习语(不信去google一下),听的时候,很随便地就能听懂了。:handshake

What would happen on Earth if human beings just suddenly disappeared? It's an interesting thought experiment to do,and journalist Alan Wiseman has done it and written up the results in the new book called 'The World Without US'.Part of the idea for the book came from the site that Wiseman visted and that human beings havn't indeed abandoned.

"Chernobyl,I went there seven years after the, after the explosion. And among other things I reported how in the absence/ human beings who're/ around the reactor that had been abandoned, how direct the nature was rushing in to feel void.It was rather remarkable to go to see one of the imaginative great devastation. And see that nature can have a fearday."

The demilitarized zone between the two Koreas devoid humans has also become a defect dome/ natural preserve.Well we will have an extended interview with world with our author Alan Wiseman on the June 27th edition of Science Talk, the weekly podcast of Scientific American.
