What would happen on Earth if human beings just suddenly disappeared? It's an interesting thought experiment to do,and journalist Alan Wiseman has done it and written up the results in the new book called 'The World Without US'.Part of the idea for the book came from the site that Wiseman visted and that human beings havn't indeed abandoned.

"Chernobyl,I went there seven years after the, after the explosion. And among other things I reported how in the absence of human beings and villages around the reactor that had been abandoned, how direct the nature was rushing in to feel the void.It was rather remarkable to go to scene one of the humanity’s greatest devastation. And see that nature was

The demilitarized zone between the two Koreas devoid of humans has also become a de facto nature preserve. We will have an extended interview with world with our author Alan Wiseman on the June 27th edition of Science Talk, the weekly broadcast of Scientific American.

What would happenon Earth if human beings just suddenly disappeared? It's an interesting thoughtexperiment to do, and  journalist AlanWiseman has done it and written up the results in the (a)new book called 'The World Without US'. Part of the idea for the book came fromthe site that Wiseman visted (visited) and thathuman beings havn't (have) indeed abandoned.

"Chernobyl,I went there seven years after the, after the explosion. Chernobyl disaster

Chernobyl disasterOn April 26, 1986, the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, exploded at 01:23 AM local time. The workers were performing anexperiment with the reactor's safety systems. The reactor received toolittle coolant, and with the control rods withdrawn the reactor began arunaway reaction. The workers attempted to re-insert the control rods, but the rods jammed. The reactor produced tremendous amounts of steam, causing an explosion and fires broke out, from the escalating heat ofthe reactor ruins. Radioactive debris was flung several miles, andirradiated smoke travelled as far as Belarus. All permanent residentsof Chernobyl and Zone of alienation were evacuated because radiation levels in the area had become unsafe.
The Chernobyl City and its surrounding suburbs are now home tonuclear scientists, maintenance officials for the Chernobyl PowerPlant, Liquidation Officials, doctors, physicists, and most of all, radiation physicists. Although Pripyat,a neighboring city to Chernobyl remains unmaintained, Chernobyl hasbeen renovated and is now home to more than 2000 people, includingvisitors to the Zone of Alienation who stay at a local lodge in theChernobyl suburbs.

The National Football League drafts its new batch of gridiron (美式足球场每隔5码画一条白线,整个球场看起来像个烤肉架) gladiators this weekend. Many of these young men will go on to fame, fortune and shirts with 21-inch necks. But a new study looks at the health of players after they are done providing highlights for SportsCentre. 这是个幽默的说法,显得这些球员拼死拼活,就为我们提供电视娱乐,如同古罗马的gladiators)  The research published in the current issue of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found that former NFL players had, not surprisingly, serious problems with chronic pain that could become a factor in depression. Almost 1,600 ex-players responded to the survey. About 15% reported moderate to serious depression and half reported chronic pain problem (Steve 读成problems, 又是个natural speech错误,这天Steve大概有些心事:loveliness: ), which itself is a strong risk factor for continued or future depression. In addition, the players who once led lives as symbols of strength and power reported that they had trouble asking for help, because they would then feel weak or embarrassed. The study of ex-NFL players thus shines a light on problems perhaps faced by many older people who once led lives of power and authority, and who now may find it hard to seek the help they need.

I reported how in the absence of human beings and villages around the reactor that had been abandoned, how 这里大家一起感觉一下口语语感!)  the rest of nature was rushing in to fill the void. It was rather remarkable to go to the scenes of one of humanity’s greatest devastations and see that nature was kind of having a field day.

Word Chunks (固定字串):

“fill the void”
“go to the scenes”
“humanity’s greatest”
“having a field day”
“de facto”

:)
