Strange Optical Effects On Moon Could Just Be Some Gas

It looks like a lot of that gas could be radon, so any moon bases could have the same problem any homeowners do on earth—radon in the basement.

Radon is an issue faced by many homeowners in the US. (http://www.epa.gov/radon/pubs/hmbyguid.html#6.b.)

我开始怀疑你是不是60-Second Science的编剧
这次比较简单,我只有最後这一句没听出来
参考资料见这
At ordinary temperatures radon is a colourless gas. When cooled belowthe freezing point, radon exhibits a brilliant phosphorescence whichbecomes yellow as the temperature is lowered and orange-red at thetemperature of liquid air.The main hazard is from inhalation of the element and its decayproducts which are collected on dust in the air. Recently, radonbuildup in homes from the surrounding soil and rocks has become asafety issue and some areas around the world test homes for radon gas.It is the heaviest known gas. Radon is present in some spring waters.

错了很多呀,呵呵
请教一个问题
Just somethingto keep in mind if you are 这句放在word里有语法错误。我听的是sounds

冒犯了,Kevin,I beg to differ.

“You should have just something to keep in mind”不是地道英语idiomatic English),不信可以去google一下。不能这么解释。

“Just something to keep in mind.” “It’s just something to keep in mind.”都是固定字串,多个字,少个字都不成。美国人常用,没得说,只能乖乖的背起来。前者Google里有小5万个citations,后者有小3万个!

同志们,多做阅读啊。

It is a mystery that has vexed astronomers for possibly 1,500 years: odd optical flashes that occasionally appear on the surface of the moon. The flashes were dubbed Transient Lunar Phenomena or TLPs. The lunar surface seems to change in brightness, bleariness(?不敢确定), of color; TLPs can last for a few minutes and cover a few kilometers. Now an astronomer of Columbia University thinks he knows what's causing the strange optical affects. Other researchers have conjectured that the release of gas from under the surface might be involved. And Columbia's Oreland Carts has uncovered strong statistical relationship between recorded accounts of TLPs and outgasing events that were documented by spacecraft. The 1971 Apollo 15 flight and 1996 lunar prospect robotic mission provided key data. The research could lead to a more comprehensive understanding of the conditions under which gases escapes from the moon's interior. It looks like a lot of that gas could be Radon, so any moon bases could have the same
problem many homeowners do on earth-Radon in the basement.

Frostbite treatment hasn’t changed much in the last 25 years. The basic therapy is to re-warm the frozen tissue, wait and hope you don’t have to amputate, which you often do have to do. In fact an axiom among doctors is “frostbite in January, amputate in July”. But a small study just published in the Archives of Surgery suggests something new might be on the horizon for frostbite victims. Researchers theorized that the medication used to dissolve blood clots might be effective in frostbite. It is called tissue plasminogen activator or TPA. One of the big problems in frostbite therapy is inflammation during thawing. The inflammation stimulates clotting that blocks small blood vessels causing cell death. The TPA apparently keeps clots from forming sparing the cells. In the study, 6 frostbite victims received TPA within 24hours of suffering their freezing injuries. While 25 others got traditional treatment. That latter group treated conventionally lost 41% of their affected fingers and toes. But the TPA treated patients were under bruising just 10% of their frostbitten digits.

The little guy lived more than 70 million years ago in what’s now the Gobi desert. In1997 his remains were discovered by fossil hunters. And in a paper published in the new issue of the journal Nature, researchers announced that they think he is a member of the kind of mammal that is the ancestor of us all. And I do mean all, all placental mammals—you, me, fido, felix, manatees, elephants, every placental mammal now living on earth. The tiny ancient shrew-like mammal is called Maelestes gobiensis. Researchers analyzed over 400 anatomical features of 69 species of living and other fossil mammals along with the recent discovery. The genealogical tree they drew puts our common ancestor right about the same time that the dinosaurs began to dwindle due to a giant impact event some 65 million years ago. So the little shrew offers confirming evidence that the disappearance of the dinosaur lines that didn’t go on to become birds was what allowed mammals to evolve into the multiple forms we see today and take advantage of all the opportunities that the dinosaurs left behind.

Here is one more reason not to smoke: a new study in the Journal of Orthopedic Research found that smoking interferes with ligament healing after injury. Anyway, one place where people apparently are getting no smoking message is New York City. Between 2002 and 2006, the city saw its smoking rate go down by 20%, that is about a quarter million fewer smoking New Yorkers, that left only 17.5% of the city still smoking, which is a lower rate than 45 states have. All these figures appeared in an article in the newest issue of Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. It's available on-line at www.cdc.gov/mmwr.What prompted the decline after decade long lack of the progress in 2002; the city increased the tobacco taxes, prohibited smoking in most workplaces, and launched a major ad campaign. Although the Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens have all seen more than a 20% drop in smoking, Staten Island’s rate remained virtually unchanged.  Well, a lot of people think Staten Island should really be part of New Jersey.

Back on our May Second episode, we talked about the brain damage suffered even by amateur boxers who wear headgears. Now imagine going into the ring bare headed, against professional boxer, or a world champion in no less. Researchers at University of Manchester, England were curious about just how much force a top boxer can generate with a punch. So they enlisted local boxer Ricky Hatton, an undefeated 28-year-old light welterweight and welterweight world champion, and they had a 30-kilogram punch bag with sensors attached. Results should make any spectators who figure they can last a while with a ring with pro think again, because Ricky Hatton, whose nickname is “the Hit man”, generated force about 400 kilograms, while average person with no boxing training can generate only about 1/10 that much force per one punch. Slow motion video found that Hatton can typically generate punch speeds of 25 mile per hour, with one blow reaching 32 miles per hour. With that punch speed, you have about one tenth of second to react.

What would happen on earth if human beings just suddenly disappeared? It’s an interesting thought experiment to do and journalist Alan Weisman has done it and written up the results in a new book called “The World without Us”. Part of the idea for the book came from the site that Weisman visited and that human beings have indeed abandoned. Chernobyl I went there seven years after the explosion. And among other things I reported how in the absence of human beings and villages around, the reactor that had been abandoned, how the rest of nature was rushing in to fill the void. It was rather remarkable to go to the scenes of one of humanity’s greatest devastations and see that nature was kind of having a field day. The demilitarized zone between the two Koreas, devoid of humans, has also become a de facto nature preserve. We’ll have an extended interview with The World without Us’ author Alan Weisman on the June 27th edition of Science Talk, the weekly pod cast of Scientific American.
