What (do you think) is Humanity's Greatest Challenge?
Field Day

The media is (are) having a field day with this!

Informal A time of great pleasure, activity, or opportunity.

也就是说,如果某人对某事表现出极大的热情、将其逮住大作文章,那就是someone is having a field day with something。

Merriam Webster: The newspaper had a field day with the scandal.
The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language: The media had a field day with the sensational story.
Encarta World English Dictionary: If the slightest hint of this gets out, the press will have a field day.

De facto is a Latin expression that means "in fact" or "in practice" but not spelled out by law. It is commonly used in contrast to de jure (which means "by law") when referring to matters of law, governance, or technique (such as standards), that are found in the common experience as created or developed without or against a regulation. When discussing a legal situation, de jure designates lawfully what the law says, while de facto designates action of what happens in practice.

The term de facto may also be used when there is no relevant law or standard, but a common practice is well established, although perhaps not quite universal.

June 26

What would happen on earth if human beings just suddenly disappeared? It is an interesting (thought) experiment to do, and journalist Allan Wiseman has done it, and written up the result in a new book called “The world without us”. Part of the ideas for the book came from site that Wiseman visited, and that human beings have been indeed abandoned.
“Chernobyl, I went there 7 years after the explosion. And among other things I reported how in the absence of human (being )  the villages around , the reactor that has been abandoned, how (the rest of)  nature was rushing in to fill the void. It was rather remarkable to go to (see the) one of the humanity’s greatest devastations, and see that the nature was kind of having a field day.
The Demilitarized Zone between two Koreas avoid of humans has also become de facto see the nature (preserve).  We will have an extensive (interview) with “the world without us” author on June 27th edition of science talk, the weekly podcast of Scientific American.

June 25, 2007:Pro Boxer's Punch Carries Heavy Weight

Back on our May Second episode, we talked about the brain damage suffered even by amateur boxers who wear headgears. Now imagine going into

the ring bare headed, against professional boxer, or a world champion in no less. Researchers at University of Manchester, England were curious just

about how much force a top boxer can generate with a punch. So they enlisted local boxer Ricky Hatton, an undefeated 28-year-old light welterweight

and welterweight world champ, and they had a 30-kilogram punch bag with sensors attached. (The) results should make any spectators who figure they

can last a while (on the ring with a ) pro think again, because Ricky Hatton, whose nickname is “the Hit man”, generated the force about 400 kilograms, while

average person with no boxing training can generate only about 1/10 that much force (with a) punch. Slow motion video found that Hatton can

typically generate punch speeds of 25 mile per hour, with one blow reaching 32 miles per hour. With that punch speed, you have about one tenth of

second to react.

Warm Crust Makes For Good Toast and Dry Land

toasty warm
the coldest crustal rock in the continent
all blub blub blub
the Emerald City

June 27, 2007: 60-Second Science
Warm Crust Makes For Good Toast and Dry Land
This week Scientists in University of Utah announced that if the earth's crust were not  so

toasty warm, most North America would be under sea.  Most people think that mountains

were made by the movement of the  tectonic plates. Those massive slaps at the land and

strikes the crust onto  the Earth's surface. True tectonic forces do build mountains. but

they do so in part by changing the temprature of the rocks they move. Hot rocks are less

dense and more buoyant. And the more buoyant as you are, the higher you float. The Utah

scientists used computer program to chill the Northern American crust to about 700 degrees

Fahrenheit. That's the temperature of the coldest crustal rock of the continent which covers

half of Cannada.Without the heat, North America sank. New York city drops ...

(?), Chicago, Los Vegas ... all blub blub blub. Interestingly, the adjustment cause Seatle to soar to

an elevation of nearly 2000 feet. That's because the Emerald  City has been a city of

crust colder than average. So tweaking the temprature makes that area warmer and

higher.Just something to keep in mind if you are looking to seek the high ground.

Please read my post #724.

Your points 2 and 3 are plain wrong. Even if the announcer had read what you wrote, the competent listener would still know he meant what I wrote (a case of natural speech mistakes). The point is that if you do not have the necessary knowledge or the schemata, you can never be sure of what you have heard.

Your point 1 is grammatically correct; but is it worth discussing? Probably not! Interestingly, if you look up the definition of inflammation in a dictionary, it does include all those symptoms in the definition.

So hit the books if you want to polish your top down listening skills.  :)
