Can only history determine an individual's greatness?
Can an individual's greatness only be identified by those who live after them, as the speaker asserts? In a sense, I tend to agree that history can determine an individual's greatness. However, the speaker overlooks some great individuals. In some areas, for instance, a scientist's greatness must be test for a long time. In other areas, such as arts, the incubation period for greatness may from case to case.
Admittedly, in sciences, it took a long time to recognized individuals 'greatness. As Pasteur once said, "What should a scientist thought of, wasn't people to give public recognition to him to appreciate or humiliate perhaps at that time, but in the future some centuries middlemen how to evaluated him. "The Polish astronomer Copernicus instituted the theory that the earth and the other planets revolve around the sun, disrupting the theory that the sun revolves around the earth. His greatness was admitted after centuries.
However, in the realm of arts, some individuals' greatness can be determined immediately, but others couldn't .Shakespeare, English playwright and poet, whose body of works is considered as the greatest in English literature. Many of his plays were performed at the Globe Theatre in London. By contrast, Van Gogh, who created the impression on painting, was received many years after his death. He could not receive contemporary appreciation and comprehension. Before the prodigy died, none of his paintings could be sold. But all of them are priceless now.
In sum, the speaker unfairly generalizes. Some examples, particularly in arts, appoint that some great individuals could receive contemporary appreciation, but someone couldn't yet. Nevertheless, especially in sciences, some individuals’greatness must be recognized by those who live after them. |
