The speaker claims that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries. While in my point of view, the speaker absolutizes the issue, so as to come to a partial conclusion. In some areas, such as arts and lectures, it is more common for the greatness of individuals to be recognized in their very days. While in other regions, especially physical science, in which only time could tell whether an idea is correct or not, the speaker’s words could be accepted.

It will not take us too much time and vigor to identify whether an art or lecture is excellent or not. Because in this area, any identified standards are subjective and the works could be judged at face value. The coming out of a good work could evoke resonance of experts in this field and also the public, for the definitions that people make on beauty are almost the same. Apt example involves Mozart and Mark Twain, both of whose greatnesses were recognized by their contemporaries. And their famous works are still adored by public nowadays.

While in the areas like physical and natural science, conditions come to be very different. We all know that a little bit forward step in physical field could cost several generations to commit themselves to the subject. Social progress could be step by step, relies on the scientific progress, because of which any new scientific ideas or theory must be on behalf of the most advanced of the very subject. There is no doubt that the new creation is out of the knowledge and experiences of other people, even almost all the experts. On this occasion, only experiments could be used to identify whether the new is confirmable. The experiments always rely on a great many factors, such as the apparatus and theory, which has a lot to do with the current social development. So the greatness of individuals in these areas are often recognized by those who live after them. Copernicus was one of this kind of great person who was recognized by later person. His heliocentric theory in the 16th century was a direct attack upon the accepted wisdom of the time, the geocentric view of the universe postulated by Aristotle and Ptolemy, which was finally confirmed.

In sum, the speaker didn’t face this issue as a whole which bring him to a partial conclusions, that could be only accepted in some areas, such as physical science. We should see that in several regions, the greatness of individuals could recognized by their contemporaries.
