The speaker’s statements seems correct in some of its details, while in my point of view[ of that view 其实感觉LZ这样表达不太好] is quite incorrect and dangerous as a whole. I concede that such non-mainstream areas of inquiry indeed have advantages in satisfying human needs, which could play a vital role in society by making the society stable for a little period of time[for short time]. While it is just these advantages which[看不懂??], in the long run, will surely do tremendous harm to[harm 不过从凑字数上考虑也换些词会好点] the development of society, and even ruin it.
We all know that astrology and fortune-telling, which serve in telling people that everything has been doomed in destiny, are
pseudoscience and fundamentally unreasoning. People who lives a poor life or involves in trouble with no knowledge and method which could lead them out might believe in it, which could tell them what to do, fill them with confidence, giving[give] them the feeling that they are not alone and make them relaxed, though it is irrational. For the individuals, the statements they get from fortune-telling or something could fill their hearts with hope and expectation, by which they could survive. But it is not real science, which could solve the problems effectively. For most of the case, it just make the individuals get through by putting the problems aside unsolved, which might break up again in other individuals, when the problems accumulated to some extent. So for the whole society, all kinds of pseudoscience are cheats, who delay the development of the society.
Another, the widespread non-mainstream areas of inquiry could lay quantities of barricades in front of society development and also consume lots of social fortune. In some remote mountain areas in China, there have been thousands of biers suspended in the holes of the cliffs, which were not allowed to get in and even touch for hundreds of years for the reason that they may have something to do with the deity, who would ruin the village if they got touched. It was not until that someone who accidentally got into one of them did they reveal the secret of them, thus discovered the ancient cultural treasure. Also, nowadays, many in China believe that family members who have gone away could bless them in another world, so that they burn paper money for the dead every year, which cost huge materials and money and also cause air pollution.
To sum up, non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits bring more harms to the society than goods they might do. We should try our best to develop mainstream science so that they solve more and more social problems rather than pin our hope on such irrational non-mainstream science.
