140.The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty
Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.

"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has
proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes
are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity
among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in
research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years.
Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and
research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a
promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion,
we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another
college."

1.班级为最大之一并不代表很受欢迎,也许只是必须上的课
2. 研究经费只在过去两年的情况,不一定以后还会有。
3. 教学能力好,不一定能当主任。理由不充足当心引起其他人不满。
4. T教授可以会去别的学校。论者没有给出资料为什么会有这样的担心,好的教授也不会仅因为物质条件决定去留。如果有地儿要挖T教授,是否加薪和升职就能挡得住。学生学校的声誉可以给她改善研究设施和环境


The arguer’s view seems to be sound and convincing at first glance that
Professor Thomas should receive a $10,000 rise and a promotion to Department Chairperson becaruse of her demmonstrated teaching and research abilities, otherwise she will leave Elm City University for another college. However, I’m afraid his argument can hardly bear further consideration since there are several flaws in it.

According to the arguer, it seems Professor Thomas’ teaching abilities and popularity among students that make her classes be among the largest at the university. However, we can hardly find evidence that students go to her classes only because of her teaching abilities and popularity rather than their necessary to go to the classes.

The great amount of money she has brought to the university in the last two years, on the other hand, is seemingly powerful reason the auger present to show the reserch abilities of Professor Thomas. But it can only count for the last two years, not for the future.

Even if her abilities are ture, a person good at teaching and reserching is not certainly good at administrating as well. As so many trivial things stuff her time, she can no longer devote herself to teaching and reserching as she did before, which will, of course, draw her abilities down. It will be the obvious reason that makes the others be critical of that.

There is no mention about that why Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college in her own opinion in the argument. The arguer has not given the information that why the university will worry about that. If there is another university trying to invite the professor to their campus to teach or reserch, can a salary rise and a promotion surely make her stay? Besides money and position, there many other factors that the professor will take into consideration, such as the repute of the university, advanced equipment which can promote her reserchment, and so on. For a really great professor, she won’t make her decision only by the money or position, but take her academic needs for the first consideration.

To sum up, whether she is really worth the salary rise and the promotion should be taken a second thought by more information not only about her teaching and reserching abilities but also about her administrating ability. About the worry that whether she is going to have a job-hopping, I suggest, Elm City University should have a talk with her to know her own thoughts. Only all of these have been done, can we reach a comprehensive conclusion about her salary rise and promotion.
