The influence of scandal in today’s society is a question of great nicety. It reveals a particular problem in an arresting way that causes world-wide attention and discussion while this over dramatic way itself may also inevitably bring along some side effects. In my opinion, scandals are useful so far as in raising eyebrows of public to treat a problem seriously. However, we shall not rely on scandals to ring alarm bell. Preventing the occurrence of a problem is required more pressingly. Let alone that some scandals are purely lead to entertainment.

We cannot deny the fact that scandals are powerful in drawing people’s attention, due to the reason that scandals are mostly fallen on the well-known individuals or institutions such as public officials, leading athletes, famous singer, prestigious companies and so forth. The alarming news causes people to focus on the problems exposed with influential concentration and enthusiasm. This may stimulate controversies and overall considerations on a problem. For instance, in 2003 Chen Jin, a professor in one of China’s most prestigious University claimed that his team had developed China’s first home-grown digital signal processor which was later confirmed to be a academic scandal in year 2005. Though it didn’t generated global headlines like the South Korean stem-cell controversy, the fake chip has a profound resonance. People began to question that whether China is pushing its leading thinkers too hard to innovate and catch up with the West. Even though the authority is tending to downplay the incident, this fraud has received widespread discussion. Scandals alarm problems to public in an effective way to some extent.

However, some kinds of scandals are only specific problems of celebrities and don’t have the function of triggering general concern. Sex scandals---which fill up a large percentage of scandals---are playing the role like that. Normally speaking, sex scandals are often associated with movie stars, politicians, or others in public eye, and become scandals only because of the prominence of person involved. For example, Clinton’s sex scandal cannot tarnish his political ability. He not only oversaw the boom of US economy but also ended his presidential career with a 65% approval rating. If Clinton’s scandal reveals a bit on public’s disquiet on the morality of public official, the endless rumor about President Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe is merely in order to satisfy public’s curiosity. Sometimes scandals are barely able to focus people’s attention but with no productive result or even harmful affection.

Consider our situation in this new millennium with the impact of rapidly developed technology and science. Problems like environment protect, terrorist attack, teenage crimes, ethic controversies and so on are still hover over our society. We are not supposed to wait for the so called scandals to draw people’s attention on problems; in fact scandals can never serve as a solution. The opinion of waiting a scandal to alert the alarm is merely passive and naïve. Speaker and reformer are required to lead the public in an assertive way and to stimulate the reasonable judgment out of people in order to let them make a correct decision on their own.

In conclusion, because the inherent function of scandals which draws attention and interests bewilderedly, reasonable people with different consideration will always debate about the feature of scandals. We need to keep a levelheaded mind on addressing this problem. With understanding the positive effect scandals bring to us, we nevertheless should exercise caution in wasting energy in some pointless scandals. Scandals are supposed to be treated as accidental incident triggers wide public concern at best. It is the speakers and reformers that deserve the support of us in the contrary.
