The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University foe another college."
In this argument, the arguer advocates that Elm City University should rise Professor Thomas's annual salary and promote her as Department Chairperson, for her outstanding abilities in teaching and research. Otherwise she will leave for another college .But there are some reasons why this analysis is unwarranted.
To begin with, the fact that Professor Thomas's has the largest classes does not necessarily imply that she is popular with students. It is possible that the department of biology, which Professor Thomas belong to, is the biggest one among this university, and her course is one of compulsory courses which all the students of this department must enroll, regardless of whether they like it or not. It is also possible that Thomas’s never given students pressure-little assignment, easy examination which everyone can get a high mark. For these reasons, the participants tell nothing about Professor Thomas's teaching abilities.
Secondly, the arguer does not provide any information regarding that Professor Thomas has brought more research grants than her colleague. It is very likely that in the Elm university, professors bring research grants which exceeded their annual salary is common. Even if she can bring more grants than others, there is no evidence that this trend very continue in the next years. May be in the past two years, Professor Thomas had a good project which attract grants, that means she will engage in this work over the ensuing month and do not have enough time for socializing. In short, lacking evidence of the endowments brought by other faculty and the trend of future endowments, the author cannot convince me that Professor Thomas has superiority in collecting funds for research.
The last but not the least, even if Professor Thomas is excellent in teaching and researching, which is, of course, an unwarranted assumption, it does not follow that she will be a competent Department Chairperson. Common sense tells us that a teacher who is good in teaching and researching not always do the same superior job as a chairperson. They are obviously different things. To addition, there are no evidence shows that Professor Thomas will leave for another university if there is no raise and promotion.
In conclusion, the argument is not well reasoned. To strengthen the acceptable, the arguer would have to provide more evidence concerning that Professor is popular with students, while can collecting more funds over the ensuing year, and weather she would leave or not without raise and promotion. |
