38The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."
提纲:
1 East Meria去医院治感冒的人少不等于痪感冒的人少。
2吃鱼不一定能预防感冒。
3鱼里面能预防感冒的成分不一定是Ichthaid。
4感冒也许只是请假的一个借口。
In this argument, the arguer recommends the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism. In order to support his or her recommendation, the arguer cites a study reporting that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of cold. In addition, the arguer notes that colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work. Actually, the statement relies on a series of assumption.
In the first place, the arguer unfairly implies that the population suffered from in East Meria is small. In fact the study cited in the statement that the people in East Meria visit the doctor only once or twice tell little about the population suffered from colds. As common sense shows, many patient of cold would rather eat medicine than see doctor, because cold is not a fierce seek. Without credible evidence the arguer can not rely on the assumption to make some convincing conclusion.
In the second place, assuming the population suffered from cold is small, the arguer further assumes that it is the consumption of fish that prevent colds. In fact, there are lots of factors that can prevent colds, such as healthy live habit, regular physical exercise, digestion of vegetable and so on. Until consider and eliminate these alternative explanations, the arguer can hardly convince me that the consumption of fish can prevent colds.
In the third place, even the consumption of fish can prevent colds, it is uncertain that Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil can prevent cold. Apparently, fish contains many kinds of supplement, such as protein ,cholesterol etc. It is equally possible that it is other supplement that prevents colds. Unfortunately, the arguer fails to take those reasons into consideration but take it for granted that Ichthaid can prevent colds, which renders his recommendation not so tenable as it stands.
Last but not the least, even Ichthaid can prevent colds, the arguer fails to prove it that it can lower absenteeism. Colds are most frequently given for absences from school and work, yet it may be just a excuse. In everyday life, if we want to ask for leave, we often trend to take cold as an excuse. In that case, even if the daily use of Ichthaid dows prevent colds, it can not lower absenteeism, because people can create new excuse.
To sum up, the argument relies on a series of unfair assumptions, which makes it not so persuasive as it stands. In order to consolidate it, the arguer must provide statistical evidence indicating that the population suffered from colds in East Meria is small. In addition, he or she should provide reliable evidence to prove that it is consumption of fish that prevent colds. In order to asses the recommendation, the arguer must prove that Ichthaid is the efficient supplement to prevent colds. At last, the arguer must prove that cold is really the reason that engender most absences from school and work rather than a excuse. |
