46Although black bears are common in the eastern Canadian province of Labrador, grizzly bears—often similar in color, but much larger—were believed to exist only in the western provinces. Despite a nineteenth-century explorer's account of having startled and narrowly escaped from a grizzly bear deep in the woods in Labrador, modern scientists find no physical evidence that grizzly bears have ever lived in Labrador. But recent research into the language and legends of the Innu, a people who have lived in Labrador for thousands of years, reveals that their language has words for two different kinds of bears, and their ancient legends n. 传说,传奇attribute different characteristics to the two kinds of bears. Therefore, there probably were grizzly bears in Labrador, and the explorer's account probably accurately identified the bear.

3 the Innu 的祖先很可能是从其他地方迁移过来的,而那两种熊可能是他们家乡的熊。

In this statement, the arguer claims that there probably were grizzly bears in Labrador. In order to support his or her claim, he or she cites a discovery reporting that there are words for two different kinds of bears in the language and legends of the Innu, a people who have lived in Labrador for thousands of years, moreover the two kinds of bears are attributed different characteristics. Close scrutiny reveals that the argument suffers from several logical flaws.

In the first place, it is ridiculous to cite a legend to prove a science thesis . As everyone knows, there are many legends in each nation, most of which is insubstantial. For example, there are many Chinese legends about dragon and phoenix, the totems of Chinese, which were attributed imagic characteristic. Actually, these two kinds of animal did not exist whatsoever. Similarly, it is possible that the two kinds of bears only exist in the imagine of the ancestors of the Innu. For that matter, the legend makes no sense as the evidence of the conclusion.

In the second place, assuming that the two kinds of bears referred in the ancient legends and language of Innu does exist the arguer further assumes that the two kinds of bears include grizzly bears. The arguer fails to provide the discrimination of the two kinds of bears, let alone compares them with grizzly bear. It is equally possibly that the two kinds of bears two other kinds of bears. Unless consider and eliminate the possibility, the arguer can hardly convince me.

Last but not the least, assuming the two kinds of bears mentioned in the language and legends of the Innu turns out to be black bears and grizzly bears, it is hasty to conclude that the two kinds of bears were in province of Lbrador. It is possible that the ancestors of Innu miagrated to Labrador thousands of years ago, the two kinds of bears in their language and legends did not refer the bears in Labrador, but two kinds of bears in their hometown. In that case the fact can not lend credible support to the argument.

To sum up, the argument suffers several logical flaws, which make it unconvincing. In order to strengthen it the arguer must provide credible evidence to prove that the two kinds of bears alluded in the ancient legend and language of Innu did exist. Furthermore, he or she must compare the characteristic of the foregoing two kinds of bears with grizzly bear’s. In order to asses the conclusion better , we must know the origination of the Innu.

In the second place, assuming that the two kinds of bears referred in the ancient legends and language of Innu does [do]exist[,] the arguer further assumes that the two kinds of bears include grizzly bears [Chinglish之嫌,建议更换语句的组织]. The arguer fails to provide the discrimination of the two kinds of bears, let alone compares them with grizzly bear. It is equally possibly that the two kinds of bears two other kinds of bears. Unless consider and eliminate the possibility, the arguer can hardly convince me. [本段主要是说明Innu语言与传说中的两种熊不一定是black与grizzly,或其中一种是grizzly, 逻辑上清楚,但是可能老外较难从本段的句子中了解作者的意思]
