153"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
Should students question whatever they are taught instead of accepting it passively? In principle, I hold a positive standpoint to that.
In the first place, the mettle to challenge authorities turns out to be the fountainhead of innovation. In nature science realm, there are lots of theories have been accepted even as axiom, actually, some of which may be false. If we can not filter those theories, science can not advance. Einstein, for instance, challenged Newton' classical physical theory which were considered as an infallible law, which lead him to his relative theory, a milestone in the history of physics. Especially, students should have the courage to question the knowledge taught in class. Assuming a student does not dare to question what is imparted by their teachers, it is beyond their boundaries to challenge giants in science like Newton, Einstein etc.
In the second place, when it comes to society science, there are no absolutely right theories, instead whether a theory is right or wrong depends on not only the logical reasoning lines but also its premise and assumption. Even if the logical reasoning line of a theory is unquestionable, if its assumption is not accordance with the reality, the theory will do harm when it is used in real world. What's more, the situation of the society is mutale, so there must be many theories become ivory-towered. For that matter, if students accept them mechanistically, they must commit the dogmatism error. For example, in the thirties of the twentieth century, President Franklin Roosevelt implement New Deal which encouraged government to regulate economy by reinforce government expenditure. Via the policy, American government pulled American economy out of depression. From then on a lot of economists advocate government to regulate economy puissantly. However, if President Bush intimate the policy, undoubtedly, he will destroy American economy. In that sense, the spirit to question what imparted in class is more imperative to the students of society science.
However, the ability of question is founded on the foundation of the muster of the knowledge. In order to question the extant knowledge we must learn it at first. For example, if a student of economics want to challenge the extant theory, he must know it well at first, moreover, he must have knowledge in other relative field such as history, politics, laws and so on.
In conclusion, it is necessary for students to question whatever they are taught, but that does not mean that they need not make effort to learn the knowledge well at first.
