TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
WORDS: 584          TIME: 1:16:46          DATE: 2007-5-30

Does the study of history have value only to the extent that it is relevant to out daily lives? The speaker claims so, but I maintain that the study of history has value not only for our daily lives, but also for other things such as the preservation of antiques and for the future.

The study of history relevant to our daily lives means that the study will have a direct impact on the society. I concede the idea that when the study of history is relevant to our daily lives, it has a great value for the reason that it can both warn people not to make the same mistake, and direct them to the right way. For instance, the studies of education of past, such as the Eight-year Study and the experiments of the progressive education demonstrates that neither the extremely  subject-centered  nor the child-centered curriculums are  appropriate for compulsory education that is intended for all students. This example persuasively supports that the study of history relevant to daily lives is valuable, because it prevents the same mistake and directs the education to a right way. Therefore, almost all the students will receive the education considering most students' need. Without such study of history, the society might commit a same mistake for several times and the human society might not develop at all. Providing that there is no study of history concerning politics in a country, no one will find any problems in the country even when it has turned to an extremely autocracy, which is very dangerous for both the country and the people. As a result, the study of history relevant to our daily lives is of great importance.

Admittedly, the study relevant to our daily lives is important, those which irrelevant to daily lives are also significant. Compared to the former one, the study irrelevant to daily lives means that that kind of study does not influence daily lives directly. However, it does not mean that the study is valueless, because it might facilitate the preservation of antiques or might be valuable in the future. For example, in the study of Greek history, researchers might have some new findings, which prove some antiques to be priceless, and then the antique will be well-preserved. Without the study, the antique might be abandoned and lost at last. In that case, the Greek culture might not be as well-presented to the world as now, and people might not be able to know the brilliant past.

For another, the study might have some good effects in the future that nowadays most people cannot notice. For instance, the history of birds banding seems irrelevant to our daily lives, but by studying that, the changing of birds' living situation can be known, so that scientists might deduct the changing conditions of the biotic diversity, which might have an influence on human living. Without the study of history of this kind, people might treat the ecological change such as global warming as something unbelievable for they are totally not prepared for the change.  Therefore, the study of history that is irrelevant to daily lives also influences daily lives finally.

To sum up, almost all the study of history whether relevant to our daily lives or not has value, because it explains the experiences of past time, so that people can make a good use of it to guide themselves. Therefore, almost all kinds of study of history should be considered as valuable and be supported.
