In today’s era of limitless reform and update, people are inevitably becoming more and more pragmatic. This statement is obviously based on this circumstance and calls for a history study restrained in a pale relevant to daily life.

To understand this issue better, we should firstly give a description for daily life. What is daily life? What kind of activity can be counted as relevant to daily life? Narrowly speaking, daily life is no other than three meals a day, working for sustenance and relaxing in the leisure time. Yet in my opinion, daily life is never limited in this humdrum framework. It has boundless aspects that are not supposed to be defined and restrained by the understanding of any individual standard. It is meaningful to consider the practical social problems in everyday life. At the same time, however, we can not negate the human nature such as revealing the truth, satisfying curiosity, pursuing for beauty or concerning about the future. Any of these plays an important role in our daily life because people, dislike machines, are all preserving discrepant dispositions and interests. Standing on this point, history study is always contributing its value to daily lives.      

The study of history in some areas demonstrates its value by providing methods and threads to understand and solve problems in our daily lives. Those quandaries and obstacles in human society do not jump into our sights without causes. On the contrary, many of them either are the accumulation of series history questions or the analogue of a past similar problem. Through thorough study of the history, we are able to conclude our precursors’ experience and wisdom, avoid the same mistake and manage to grasp the current situation ultimately. For example, through the study of Nazism history disclose the reason and condition for the prevalence of totalitarian in German from 1933 to 1945. This disastrous lesson teaches us to be vigilant of any sort of intervention into democracy today.  

The study of history also can provide a theoretical platform for people to interpret and predict future. Based on the assumptions about the recurrence of historical events and patterns, we can better handle future recurrences by understanding history. Or based on looking to recent history, we can comprehend the trends that are likely to continue in the future. These grasp about future will definitely serve to facilitate our daily lives as long as we broaden our sight on the description of daily lives.

Last but not least, we need history study sometimes just for satisfying curiosity about our past human activities and this world around. We human beings, as the most predominant specie on earth, have various cultures, religions and races. We also have the enduring and enthralling past that verify our steps from ancient time till today. How did ancient Egyptians managed to build the Great Sphinx of Giza? What the curse behind the Pyramid of Khafre? How prosperous was it in Chang’an, the world’s biggest city at that time in Tang Dynasty, China? When did the Native Americans come to this continent at the first time? We are trying to know these history questions not because of the narrowly defined “daily life”. If we lock ourselves in the pitiable plight where every step need to follow the direction of daily life and every move is the result of pragmatism, we will soon lost the beauty that history study brings to us.

In conclusion, we should not let the practical-oriented thoughts restrain the history study. History study not only can provide solutions in the commonsensical life, but also is able to predict future and satisfy curiosity for understand ourselves better. These all contribute to our daily lives. That’s the fascination of history study.
