103. "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives." [05/34; 06/3]

Each year, a great deal of resources is consumed in the various researches of history. There are many people, say, like the author, claim that the study of history has value only when it is relevant to our daily lives. Therefore, it is unworthy to invest so much in all of them. In my view, however, the investigation of history is always being meaningful to us more or less, whether they are relevant closely to our daily lives.

Our daily lives may benefit much from the study of history in many aspects. Taking economy, which has tremendous impacts on our daily lives, for example, since Liberation in 1949, in order to keep a stable economic development and social justness, China, under the lead of Chairman Mao, established a nationwide state-run economy. Whereas, counterproductively, the mode of economy merely lead to economic stagnation and durative poverty. Recognizing the fatal mistake from the investigation on the Mao’s economic policy of this duration, Deng Xiaoping put forward a new approach but dramatic reform. He first introduced some elements of market economy into Chinese economy. Resulting from this strategic turning, China’s economy got a soar in the next several years. Luckily enough, we soon learn lessons from the study of history after the past sacrificial decades.

Not only the study of economy system, but also the study of warfare, from which we can learn much. The World War I and World War II, which made infinite distresses to the worldwide people, resulting in that people can’t live normally. From studying the causes and the results of those important wars, we can avoid many unnecessary wars in the future, which contribute to our peaceful and beautiful daily life a lot.

However, there are also many researches of history having little relationship with our daily lives, such as the study of the Great Wall, the study of Dream Of The Red Chamber and so forth. The Great Wall, as a safeguard of the old ages, is merely a place we can go to visit to, and Dream Of The Red Chamber is just a common novel to an ordinary people. Even though, the study of them contains a lot of values. The Great Wall, which was built up thousands years ago, demonstrates the intelligence of our ancestors. There is a new group of experts who invest specially on Dream Of The Red Chamber. They even analyze a recipe in the novel to conjecture the status of the dramatis personae or the state of the whole society in that time. Also, some study of the hominid’s society is irrelevant to our daily life. But you can hardly deny their meanings to the entire development of human being’s civilization.

To sum up, there are studies of history which is relevant to our daily life, and studies not, but both of them are valuable to us, whether for the past or the future.
