For this discussion, about theory and data, I have to agree with the author, that theory must be found based on enough and credible data, otherwise, we may make some grave mistakes.

It is admittedly accepted that without practice theory could not be theory, just like the words Marx once said “practice is the sole criterion for testing truth.” Practice testing is a progress eliminating the false and remaining the truth. Among all the theory tested by practice, only the ones through it could become truth, which is the basis of other theory.
Knowledge is a treasure, but practice is the key to it. All theory accepted now is based on data, for instance, Copernicus finally advanced the distinguished theory that the earth and the other planets revolve around the sun, after 30 years’ observation and accurate computation; Louis Pasteur, father of microorganism, set up the basis theory of microbiology due to consistently observation and experiments. All these demonstrate that without sufficient data, it is a grave mistake to theorize.

However, theory will react to practice at the same time practice testing it. It is the interwork between theories and practices that impulse the development of the society. So there is a question, where theories come from, and the answer is that mostly from imagination and creativity of the scientists. But “imagination is not to be divorced from the facts: it is a way of illuminating the facts. “ quotes the word of Thomas Fuller, a British churchman. Scientific deduce based on other former theory and observation is a way of setting up a scientific theory, which could go through the practice testing. Just like Columbus test his creative theory that the earth is round by his round-the-earth travel. Einstein put forward and the scientific world finally tested its truth and accepts it.

So, as a conclusion, I’ll quote two proverbs to conclude my view, one is “If I have seen father than Descartes, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants.” from Newton, and the other is “Knowledge is a treasure, but practice is the key to it.” said by a British philosopher.
