TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."


In the argument above, the author claims that only when it impact our daily life directly, the study of history is valuable. As far as I think, the author seems to fail to take into account the fact that the study of history serves us in many ways, as giving us a general grasp of the past as well as an open view to the future.

To begin with, the study of history makes us learning the grandeur of the people in the past, and encourages us to develop ourselves. For example, after learning the history of the founding of the Unite State, we can do nothing but highly praise the founders for their courage and determination. Without their hard work and stave struggle, maybe America is still the colony of England. And then, we can understand that we should insist on our own dreams and hanker, no matter how hard it is, as the founders of USA done. The history is a mirror for us in the plane lives and makes us courageous and powerful to face the difficulties and deal with them.  

In addition, after seeing the mistakes in history we could avoid ourselves to repeat those mistakes. Take the so-called "Star Wars" defense initiation for example, which is championed by the Reagan administration during 1980s, the initiation has been proved to be ill-conceived and left us with nothing but an unprecedented federal budget deficit and rampant social violence. It is a waste of taxpayer’s dollars and made the society declined. According to seeing this mistake, our political leaders and government should make a decision after an in-depth thinking and all-aspect surveys. As a fact, the history is a great mirror for the posterity. We can avoid the mistakes the anterior people have made and walk in a right way.  

Finally, the knowledge of history makes our daily life more humanism and interesting. When we sit under the light and reading a book, we have to praise the wisdom of Edison. When we fly over the world, we have to praise the contribution that the Wright brothers made to us. With their invention, we can fly over the ocean and go to a country far from us in a short time. All this things contribute directly to those history’s heroes. They promoted the development of our society. So when we enjoy the advantage in our daily life, it is interesting for us to remember the people made those advantages and appreciate them.

In sum, history is a thing that has latent affects with our daily in every aspect in any time, though it does not impact our life directly. So that, though what has been discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that study of history is helpful and useful for all of us and every one should be encouraged in learning history, which will benefit his life and work, even the society as a whole.
