TOPIC: ARGUMENT190 - The following is a letter to the editor of the Glenville Gazette, a local newspaper.

"Over the past few years, the number of people who have purchased advance tickets for the Glenville Summer Concert series has declined, indicating lack of community support. Although the weather has been unpredictable in the past few years, this cannot be the reason for the decline in advance ticket purchases, because many people attended the concerts even in bad weather. Clearly, then, the reason for the decline is the choice of music, so the organizers of the concert should feature more modern music in the future and should be sure to include music composed by Richerts, whose recordings Glenville residents purchase more often than any other contemporary recordings. This strategy will undoubtedly increase advance ticket purchases and will increase attendance at the concerts."


The argument seems to be right at the first glance. However, though an all-aspect thinking we can find out that there are some analyze mistakes in the argument, and the fact may be different from the author think.

At the first place, the author fail to give us enough evidence to convince us that the community support of Glenville Summer Concert was declined. It is true that the sale of advance tickets was not good as in the past recent years, but there might be some other reasons except lacking of community support. It is possible that people prefer purchasing ticket before they go into the concert than take the advance ones. Moreover, there is no date to show that there is a decline of the present of concert. May be there is a large increasing number of people who would like to buy tickets before they get into the concert.

At the second place, it is unreasonable to claim that Glenville Summer Concert must to take some changes in the choice of music and feature more modern music. Even when we suppose that the community support is declined, it is not means the music playing in the concert is not popular. There may be some other causes response to the decline, as the bad weather, the lag of equipment in the concert. Moreover, it is possible that a majority of people going to the concert is not young people, and they prefer classicality music than modern music. So playing more modern music may be a mistake.

At the third place, although the music composed by Richert is wildly popular in this area, it can be the evidence to claim that people would like to listen to his music in concert. They may complain that they have listen to his music enough at homes, and they want to make a change in concert. And another possible is that Richert’s music is not suitable for playing in concert. For example, most of his music is light music, and when the concert is noise, as a concert usually been, the audience can enjoy the music well.

In sum, the author takes a mistake analyze that the sale of advance tickets declined equates the lack of community support and ignores the complex causes of the sale decline of Glenville Summer Concert advance tickets. If the author wants to persuade us, he must give us more essential evidence to support the opinion that the sale decline of advance tickets is the result of decline of community support, and action must be taken to solve this problem.
