226. "People are mistaken when they assume that the problems they confront are more complex and challenging than the problems faced by their predecessors. This illusion is eventually dispelled with increased knowledge and experience."
提纲:

The speaker asserts that the problems people confront nowadays not as complex and challenging as that faced by their predecessors and even the complex one would be solved through the increased knowledge and experience. I agree that the developed technology could solve some problems, which is treated as most challenging one in the past, other than all the problems. However, I strongly disagree that people assume some problems more complicated than before is an illusion.
As for the claim that people assume that they confront problems which are more complex and challenging, we already have sufficient empirical evidence that some of these problems have already been solved with increased knowledge and experience. Nearly half-centuries ago, most countries--such as China--still struggle to the famine, especially in the 1960-1963 almost all the people in the whole china have nothing to eat, even much misery than any situation in the Chinese history. However, this tragic scene is disappeared forever since the Chinese scientist YuanLongPing invents the cross-gene wheat technology. In fact, the food supplies problem which is so-called more complex and challenging problems in several countries during the term of cold war already be completely solved.
Moreover, in my view, the most common challenging problems in current world, such as war and religion confliction, are as complex as that in the past, since it is the problem oriented from the human’s intrinsic characteristic. For example, the recent new focus is the Iraq war and perhaps forthcoming Iran war, however we can find the same case in several thousands years ago since the human being lived in that area. As the most famous old culture centre, Iraq already suffer many conflicts and wars in her history, referring to several aspects from the territory proprietary to the religion benefit. Could any one honestly claim that there would be some approach in solve these complex problems through the increased knowledge and experience serves as a suitable substitute for the hundreds years conflicts? Surely not.
But, the problems produced in the modern times from the highly developed technology is not only more complicated and challenging than some problems in the past but also very difficult even impossible be solved with increase knowledge and experience. Such problems as euthanasia, clone human and abortion are really complex problems to every scientists, politician and philosopher. When the problems combining the technology and traditional ethic emerge in front of our humans, no think tank could have any idea about how to solve this tuff questions. After all, more and more current problems is related to the philosophy and ethics subject, which we still have no suitable and clear definition and law for every thing, and it is also very difficult to give a equitable and permanent rule in this subjects. As a result, people would fund that the problems produced by modern technology and related to these fields is really complex and challenging than the problems faced by their predecessors.
In sum, while some problems treated as most complex one in the past already dispelled today with the increased knowledge and experience, and these problems existed in nowadays might have the same fate as those disappeared one. However, these high degree developed technology create some new problems which would be more difficult to solved than anyone in the past, at least from the today's methods, it is more complex and challenging than those confronted by the predecessors. |
