TOPIC: ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."

The speaker predicted that the history provides us with little guidance for living due to the modern society undergo changes greatly and become more complex. No one can deny that the modern society suffer some new problem that never appeared in the past. However, I can not agree with the speaker for that history can bring us so many experiences and lead to make us stronger.

Admittedly, there are some new phenomena that we can not find in the history books, and the history can not provide us with the way to deal with those new problems. For instance, there is a hot debate about the clone technology. On one hand, some people support it by the season that this new high technology will bring us much advantages in medicine and biology. On the other hand, other people claim that it will become a tragedy of human's life and it breaks the society morality. Which way should we choose at the cross? The forefather did not give us the answer. Besides, when we face to the problem of computer crime, nuclear weapon, and so forth, the history experience seem to be poor. We can not find out answers of those questions though history, because they are so new things that our forefather could not meet. In a word, the experience of history is limited in the new high technological field.

Notwithstanding the concession above, I generally disagree with the speaker's statement for the reason that we can protect ourselves repeating the ancestor's mistakes though review the trend of history. Take the so-called "Star Wars" defense initiation for example, which was championed by the Reagan administration, it was proved completely ill-conceived and brought us nothing but unprecedented federal budget deficit and rampant society violence. In retrospect this history, the presidents and governments followed must be more careful when them make a political decision. After all, we should avoid us to make the mistakes that human have been made before, and we should learn to more wise.   

In addition, we can make ourselves being encouraged though looking back the history's heroes and the story of those great men. When we learn the history about the foundation of United States, we must praise for the fighters’ courage and determination. Without their hard struggle, maybe America is still the colony of Britain. From that story, we are encouraged to be more courage and determination to go after our dreams. A large number of people would agree that there were at least one hero made them shook and encouraged when they were children. The hero’s stories even influence their whole lives or change their lives. In that case, history promotes the changes of the modern society.

In final analysis, history can not be denied in the modern society. Although some problem today can not be solved by the measures used in the past, we can protect ourselves repeating the forefather's mistakes and be encouraged to perform better though retrospect the track of history.
