26"Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served."
Every societies have its past and its present. Protecting the historic buildings is one of the ways to preserve the history while remove the old building is one of the ways to develop the modern civilization. There is much controversy about which is more important than the other. In my opinion, modern civilization does not exclude history and they are compatible.
Historic buildings represent a valuable record of any society’s past. Many precious old buildings, as an old man, can tell us old stories or share their experience with us. Terra-cotta Warriors tells us an old story about an emperor Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of china, who believed that he could still lead an luxury life after his death with the protection of his army. So the army of more than 10000 terracotta soldiers was built to guard his tomb. The Forbidden City serves as an excellent architect from who many architects can learn much. From studying the historic building, we can know more about our ancester’s tools, life sstyle, aesthetic, and so forth. Besides research values, old buildings also serves as placebo and reminder of spirits. On every 11th september, many people will spontaneously gather on the site of world trade building to mourn their relatives or friends and remind themselves of the cruel behavior of terrorists. Moreover, historic buildings can also make money as tourism resources like modern buildings. Just what I mentioned aboved the Terra-cotta Warriors and the Forbidden City attract thousands of tourists coming from all arouns the world to china with millions of dollars, which greatly propell the modernization construction of cities where these old buildings located.
Although historical buildings are irrecoverable resources, it does not mean that all old buildings have historical values. Before deciding to protect a certain old buildings, we must evaluate it properly. Because some of the old buildings are valuble record, travel attraction and city emblems, while some are not. What we should preserve is the former, as for the later, modern planners can remove them for contemporary needs. After all, it is not realistic for modern people to live in a place full of old buildings. We also need skyscrapers, supermarkerts and cinemas.
In the final analysis, historical buildings and modern civilization are not born incompatible. What matters is how we deal with them. Take the Beijng Zoo as an example. Several years ago, modern planners feel that the place where Beijng Zoo locates could be better used for modern purpose regardless of its hundreds of history. This proposal was strongly against by the residents who lived nearby and others who are historical advocates. At last, a better approachment was work out. The old zoo was removed to a new place which locates in the suburb of Beijing city and was easily available for the residents. Meanwhile, the new place can provide enough room for some animals comparing with the old one. And the money got from selling the land of the zoo can solve many problems the zoo faced due to lack of money.
In sum, it is not wise to say that modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historical buildings. In fact, both of them are imporant. Equiped with the valuable record of the past and the development of modern society, we can predict a bright and stable future.
